I decided to build a 2nd pickgaurd for my AL HH. I love the the stock pickups, and I have the GC coil split, and those pickups split really well. BUT those pickups certainly don't work for everything and I wanted to try some different flavors and have an alternative for different gigs/sessions/moods. So got a pair of Stingray RS pickups for pretty cheap, wired up a new pickguard for a 3 way blade selector and 50's wiring, Dimarzio pots, and a 47 cap. Much clearer, more percussive overall, especially on the neck pickup which is where I live most of the time (clean to somewhat dirty. Not high gain too often). I can cop much closer tones to Wes Montgomery, John Abercrombie (third quartet stuff) and Pat Metheny, while kind of losing those thicker Radiohead-type cleans (like on Weird/Fishes, which the Dimarzios did much better). Overall I like the pickups quite a bit-people seem to complain about them more than others but that could just be internet/people tend to complain more than talk about things they like. Interesting vowel sounds on the lower strings I don't know how I quite feel about. Haven't played with 50's wiring before. There are some things about it I like but it takes a lot more riding of both knobs to find the spots I want. Not sure if the pot tapers are the best with this setup or if it's just the quirks of 50's wiring. Gonna try a Duncan Seth Lover in the neck as well. And yes, I'm keeping the the original pickups! They'll be back in at some point. Just figured I'd kinda turn one guitar into two.

Update: Had a Seth Lover in the neck, a Custom/59 Hybrid in the bridge, and then a '59 in the bridge. Couldn't get along with the Custom 59/Hybrid. I wanted something closer to the stock Dimarzio in the bridge and the Custom/59 seemed a good bet as something close enough but different enough and I couldn't get along with it. Harmonics for days, which was a lot of fun, but HARSH mids, far too much of an "AH" vowel tone and way louder than I expected. Couldn't find a balance I liked between the two pickups on their own (but they did blend in the middle position very nicely). Swapped that for a '59 which matched a lot better. Great bridge pickup. I hadn't really played with PAF style pickups before this project.

The Seth Lover lives up to the hype-dynamic, complex, clear and bright but still warm...BUT, it's almost too perfect to be interesting. Just didn't feel like me. I really started missing the the original Dimarzio's so the original pickguard is back in. Plus the long feet don't fit the routing too well.

I have a set of Toneriders (Alnico 2 neck, Alnico 4 bridge) I could try as another PAF alternative, but not sure how inclined I am to do that right now. Plus I have a Lollar Novel CC (Charlie Christian Humbucker, neck) and a set of Harmonic Design Z90's (I've also played minimally with P90's, though the couple of guitars I've owned over the years with P90's I thought sounded like ass. That said, that was back when I was a lot more ignorant and disinclined to electronics mods/swaps. Also, the HB sized P90's Railhammer makes sound killer). I wanted to try something in the P90 range again as all the clips I've heard of AL with MM90's sound amazing (which, word is, they're also voiced a little leaner than the most common P90's). I went Harmonic Design because a) word is they live in that range between Stratty single and P90 while also apparently having their own thing comparable to nothing else (one person said between Jazzmaster, PAF, and P90. And that sounds like a lot of fun).

Have you ever tried the Pearly Gates? It's still a vintage output pickup but should have a little more attitude than the Seth Lover. Comes standard with shorter legs too! (y)

I have not but I've heard good things. Also intrigued by the Saturday Night Specials. Don't know why I've been fixated on Duncans for humbuckers, there are a lot of great options. I've also heard great things about the Dimarzio 36th Anniversaries. But I think I'm also looking more at Humbucker sized non Humbucker options at this point.

Money combo! Lollar Novel CC and Railhammer Nuevo 90. Tones match really nicely, it's a clean tone monster but still maintains a balance of fullness and cut with gain. I was initially dubious on the gold of the Lollar and the black of the Nuevo 90 (landed on those as I got REALLY good deals on them) but aesthetically I feel like it's 'classy DIY' and really cool looking.
