I just "discovered" that the single coils on the AL also have the silent circuit that the MM90's have. For some reason, I always assumed that they didn't and as much as I love the sound of the MM90's on my ASS, I just think the singles look so much better on the AL. I'm wondering if it's describable. I know that when I need more "bell" I get off my Axis and onto my MM90 ASS. But I only own 1 guitar with true single coils and it's not a Music Man and has nothing to kill the buzzing.

And yah...I'll take my own advise and head down to Pete's and try them back to back. I'm starting to think the guys down there expect my periodic visits with my "near" guitar playing and indecisive excursions and...well, I'm babbling now......

Jack,

Must agree with Glenn and Rob, MM-90 AL smokes, have had a few ASS with MM-90, while like all EBMM killer the MM-90's rule on the AL, but aint nothing wrong with the SSS either though I am not a big fan of the bridge pup unless that bridge pup is on a BFR AL:D

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my MM90 AL - it could still deliver the real nice cleans of the SSS and the cluck and quack but with a little bit more grunt -just don't expect Humbucker capabilities.

The physical size of the MM90's does mean however that if you play with a pick and your other 3 fingers- sometimes the pick rattles on the face of the MM90, whereas with the SSS you have a bit more room to manoeuvre.

I kinda disagree (we all have our opinions;))with Fing on the bridge pickup.
When I used it in anger the other week through a fender Blues junior - I loved every pickup selection.

Although the 90's clean up well and give you the in between sounds, I find the true singles on the gremlin AL to be a bit sweeter than the 90's on the envy AL. But then the 90's can definitely rough up more than the single's (in fact i just finished noodling a round of ZZ Top tunes on the envy). So say on a 10 scale of sweet bell to overall raunch I give the singles 1 through 6/7 and the 90's 2 though 8/9.

AL MM90 and ASS MM90 are really different beast even if they are close in specs.

I really love the sound of MM90 better than SSS on the AL. One thing to notice is that ROB, Spud and I have an AL MM90 wth rosewood fretboard. this combination is again to taste and my ears the best one

After re reading this I would also like to say that my SSS AL is my "go to first" guitar.

Just a thought - if the likes of Hendrix, Beck, Rory Gallagher can deliver with SSS then the MM SSS can do likewise.

-There again the MM90's are nice "rolled back" - vol and tone.
Shoot - order two off Pete, SSS & MM90 because you won't be 100% happy until you have both :D

I love the MM90 pickups on the AL and would jump on the one I have in white pearl if I didn't already have a BFR and hss AL.

You have good taste (yah....like I had to even say that....).

I was playing that white one at the JP/JM meet and greet. I ask my son how he likes it. He just says "I don't like white guitars". I guess if he's buying it for me, he can make the color choice. I'll break it to him tonight that he needs to buy me an Al in another color.

I'm still learning about backing off the volume. I tend not to with the mm90's and really need to. When I switch off guitars, it's usually to something totally different (semi-hollow with high output hums) which definately gets rolled back.

Spud......I think you need to talk with my wife! :D
