I posted sometime ago if anybody had tried this elsewhere but didn't get any responses, so I went out and bought one!

I've just got back from collecting the ultimate (for me) in AL in enhancers

<pause for dramatic music>

The AL is the ultimate killer and I get great blues tones out of mine, this makes it a whole lot better!

I'll post sound clips eventually but just wanted to spread the word - it's a 1974 champ, all stock and mint, It's ball related, becuase to be honest a strat I played through it sounded awful!!!

Just an al and the pignose Pedal LUm gave me and I'm set!

Now you've seen the eye candy has anyone else tried playing AL's through smaller older all valve amps - it's like gold in a tone....????

Nice Smelly, would like o hear how it sounds, looks like it is mint, I would try that road but man old valve amps are expensive, and I would have to see it and try it first so evilbay is out, the few I have come across are either crap or way to high in price.

But i bet that thing doe sound great with your AL.

Congrats on the find:)

The AL doesn't exist for me , but my SS sounds good through a Gibson Goldtone GA15.....not that old, but a pretty old concept.

I would never buy something old electrical, especially something that you would rely on at a gig. Maybe nice to record with or have at home, but not something that you could use night in night out. I think the 'old is best' idea only exists in the guitar world. Nobody would ever buy a 40 year old TV set 'Nice warm picture sir' :)

Old ? Old? Surely you mean "vintage" or "piece of history" ??

I assume if this amp still sounds good 30 years on many of its internal workings have been replaced. I'm sure there is a thriving market in "vintage" amps.

I'm with you though Tim, new guitars & amps for me!

Smelly - nice one !

I got ripped off on one of those back in '77 and lost my £65 that I paid for it new.

I can see where Tim is coming from on the "old amp" theory.

I very nearly bought an old battered MM combo but relented and bought something newer.- the Mesa.

I don't play any where near as often as I used to however I would have no qualms in regularly using my 87 Marshall - because I know it just won't let me down.
- Hell - I'm still going strong after all these years so don't put me on the scrap heap just yet !!

Smelly - o/t Work has pulled my trip to Inverness next week - crazy as the flights were all paid for - at least I'll see you at the Bash!!

Well, it works for some cars too! heh...

But try selling an old watch? You'd have to be pretty special to be able to flip the watch...

Nice one Mike!!

Tim, you don't need to worry about buying an old amp, especially if it's well put together. I've got a Hiwatt from 1973 (same year as me) and it's bullet-proof.
