They are like 2 unrelated guitars, in my opinion. I'd consider trading my Axis for an HH Al, as they're so similar in how I would use it. The SSS......keep your mits off it.....I got nothing else that's even close!

Ya, I've been wondering about what the split coil sounds are like in the AL HH....and whether it is possible to get a twangy sound....I'm guessing yes, I'd like to hear from some AL HH owners to get their opinion....

Nothing beats the al SSS for the twangy sound!! The al HH with split coil gets close but not the same. The al HH is a monster with monster sound heavy! These 2 guitars have a sound of their own! i know this doe not help too much but its the truth!!!

The only thing the two AL models really have in common is the shape. They are both, however, awesome! Anybody want to trade their beat up AL SSS for ny beat up AXIS, let me know.

As Jack stated they are two different beast tonally, so it would not be a close comparison to make even in out of phase settings. Blues gives a great demo of the guitar if you want to check out what it can do.

Thanks guys, yeah it seems they are poles apart, am torn really on where i want to go as am in market to get one but the HH has put a serious curve into the straight and also seems the choice in finishes here are limited to the red one!!!!
Will try to hook up the Saranceno demo, he has a knack of making a good gear demo, nothing to flash but manages to get the best out of the tones avaiable!

They are different beasts for sure having played both. I don't rate the split humbucker sounds too much, definitely not like a true single coil, but more a halfway house, so you'll have to get one of each.

As a plus on the HH model is that unfreakingbelievably nice all rosewood neck...

I haven't played an AL HH yet, but I have owned an Axis SS and sampled a 25th a while back. I know lots of folks point out that the split coil positions on these HH guitars can't match a true single coil sound. Being a very proud owner of an SSS Silo Special, I would agree. If you want the tones from a typical single coil setup, get a SSS AL or SSS Silo Special.

That all being said, I do LOVE the sound of the single coil positions on the Axis SS and 25th. I wouldn't discount them for a second. Those positions are extremely clear and offer fantastic clean tones. Again - this is my experience with the Axis SS and 25th. I suspect the AL HH split coil positions sound equally impressive.

Ok....to throw you in a totally different direction, listen to some of Johnny Hiland's songs. He gets about as twangy as twangy can be......and he does a good bit of rocking too. His choice is a Silhouette with a trem. His picture is up in my office, so it just came to mind......

well, lets put it this way... position #4 (out side singles) is my favorite sound on the HH AL. Its not quite a true single coil, its not a Humbucker... its a little dirty, its a little fat and it fills the basic need for a good single coil-ish tone. I will be adding a SSS guitar at some point... but I can get a great Gilmour-type tone out of the HH AL in position 4... if that helps.
