Albert Lee question

Has anybody experienced a problem with the sound of your Albert Lee muddying up when you roll off the volume.
I have a 2009 Albert Lee with three single coils and if I'm playing off the neck pickup and roll the volume back, the sound becomes noticeably muffled/muddy. I don't have to roll it back very far before its quite noticeable.

It does not seem to change from amp to amp.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Otherwise, I really like the guitar.

Greg, glad to hear you like the AL, they are great guitars. Did you buy this new or used? if you bought it new, talk to the dealer you bought it from first. If you get no success, then give customer service a call, they might be able to help you out here.

I'm sure others will chime in and possibly help.

Hi and welcome - absolutely no problem at all. In fact it is one of the attributes I like about the AL.
My Les Paul was "all or nothing" on the tone control quite the opposite to the Al.

Are you playing clean or with a lot of gain? What amps have you tried it with?

I have a 2HB AL and it is the same way... I love how the volume and the tone knobs are factors in the tone you can get from your AL. The Axis sport does the same thing so I would not be too worried. But if you got it from a dealer have them take a look...

Guitar Cables and pedals can have a big impact on that. Have you tried it with a really good quality cable and going straight into the amp?

Have to say I have not found this to be the case with the 20+ AL's that ive owned. The volume rolled down is a sweet tone, so useful live.

I have not noticed any issues with the sound being muddy on my SSS Albert Lee. I roll off the volume all the time during rehearsals and gigs and haven't noticed a change in sound quality.

I play through a Koch Studiotone 20 and a 68 Fender Deluxe Reverb. I pretty much play straight into the amp. I don't think its my cables -- i've got a few high and mid range cables and that does not seem to make a difference. Neither my G & L or my Tele have the same issue when I roll off the volume.

I'll check with the dealer, but am not expecting a whole lot of support there. I bought the AL from a dealer in another province. I'll likely just have my tech take a look and, if the situation warrants, I'll think about replacing the pot.

Depending on the cable you're using, this could just be normal. As you turn down the volume pot you're going to lose some highs. You can put a cap & resistor across the volume pot - the "treble bleed" mod - which will prevent that if it's a big issue.

But yeah, I'd start with having someone give it a once-over to make sure it's all wired up properly.

yeah, shouldn't be any fuzz. But the Volume and tone are very responsive...
