My first gig as a bassist was a success, sure there was a few bad notes, but over all everything went very well. I got paid and was asked back next week; actually I was told I have the gig for as long as I want it.

Now here’s another thing, I played piano in this same band a few years a go, but as the bass player I get paid more, have I been playing the wrong instrument for the last 30 years?

Sooooo, am I a bass player yet??? I need an official ruling from the Bass Board of Advisors.

I had a blast and thanks for all the encouragement from you guys in my other thread, it really helped.

Thanks,

Chuck

It’s a hot spot for sure! Charlie McCoy (Nashville harmonica ace) once gave some great advice, “when in doubt, lay out”, which has served me well thru the years. But that absolutely does NOT apply to the bassist! On keyboards unless there is a piano intro of some sort you can lay out till you figure out what’s going on, not true for the bass guy, he has to “know”.

Last night on a ballad (one I actually knew) I was playing the StingRay 5 thru my Ashdown… I felt the power! Man that was fun, huge bottom that filled the room, not loud, just HUGE!

I’m hooked!

sorry to rock your boat, but if you have to ask - then no. you're not a bass player yet.

I think there needs to be some sort of public rejection of the....shudder......keyboard thing before we can overlook it and welcome you in.

On second thouight.....it's cool.

Welcome to the club!

Well the… um, the keyboard thing, sort of pays for the bass thing… for now anyway. But, I’ve bought 11 basses and only one keyboard in the last year and a half, so I’m headed in the right direction.

Looks like I’m a bass player now (granted, only an entry level bass player), I hope to achieve the level of “Good Bass Player” someday. It’s a long road to go, but damn I’m having fun!

Thanks for the encouragement,

Chuck

you guys are too easy.

it was a Triton that injured my Bongo. took a big chip out of the bottom of it. why? because of the 80s and the fact that keyboards TRIED to take the place of bass players but lost. the triton was getting it's revenge by taking it out on my 2 month old bongo.

this isn't as simple an issue as i think you're all making it out to be. a keyboard player calling himself a bass player. until he calls himself a bass player without having to mention the keyboard thing, he's a keyboard player, damitt!

besides, it took me a year when i switched from guitar to bass to consider myself a bass player, not a guitarist playing bass. lets not give up our ranks so easily.

YOU'RE A KEYBOARD PLAYER PLAYING BASS UNTIL WE HEAR NOTHING MORE OF THE KEYBOARDS!!!

I was forced to listen to keyboard bass at a
club this w/e. damn thing sounded like
"Seinfeld" bass. I'm glad you made the switch.

In the early 90's, it was my ex-keyboard player
who turned me on to MM basses. He also quit
the boards & bought a Sterling. Couldn't play
that well but I loved the tone and sold my Spector
and my Jazz to buy a Ray.

If you're not yet taking pride in it, then you're not a Jedi yet.

Too funny... BTW, I agree that the keyboard got a bit too comfortable in the "bass space" in the eighties. And still to this day I am somewhat offended when folks I am playing with suggest "we need to add a keyboard" - like it's personal...

Gee... Maybe I have issues? ;)

Hey thanks, I certainly don’t want to offend anybody. For the record my only regular gig now is my bass gig. I freelance on “other instruments” to support my bass addiction. My next “fix” is a left hand Bongo… when they become available.

Lord Bongo, thanks for your kindness.

After considering the fact that you've bought 11 basses......I'm prepared to say "Bass Player"

Nothing wrong with the keyboard, I mean Eddie Van Halen dabbles with one so it must be cool......

And lets not forget Geddy
