Im gonna be getting a new amp fairly soon, but needed some advice. At the mo im using a 10 watt marshall guitar amp, its crap, dont know why i've had it for so long. Basically, when buying an amp, does it HAVE to be bass specific? Reason im asking is i've found a nice marshall cab for £229, its a marshall AVT-412B. Also, i've been looking at an SWR LA 15 100 watt combo, has anyone ever used this amp? All advice is appreciated.

You can use any amp you want within reason, but you need to ensure that the frequency range of the speakers can handle bass.

I think that the LA series from SWR is pretty good too. A guitar cab will do but the low end isn't gonna be that great you'll get that really "retro" Sabbath/Cream sound (I think Geezer and Jack both used guitar cabs with 12s for a while) but you might want to go with the SWR. If you can try out that guitar cab before buying it that'd be a good idea too.

BTW , I'll never go near Cider again after my time at a lock-in in Newtown a couple years back! :D :D

The SWR is sounding pretty good, and its cheap, which is good too. Getting some good reviews, maybe i'll get that one.

So i've been looking around a bit more and have come across the GK MB150S. Was wondering if anyone had heard it? Its kind of pricey at £549, but it might give me the tone im after. Im not really in need of an amp to gig with, as i play mainly for my enjoyment, in my bedroom and dont really see any gigging prospects. So I suppose i'd much rather tone over volume. I really like the "flea tone" and would love to be able to replicate that tone. Does anyone have any input on this amp? If im not after mind blowing volume, is it really worth its £549 price tag?

I have a GK MB150 and love it.It is a great practice and rehersal amp and beefs up if you use an extension cab but I would not recommend it for serious gigging. It is a tiny little amp and packs an incredible punch for the size but....I use a larger amp for all but the smallest gigs.

I wouldnt be gigging with it at all, I just want something which has enough volume (My crappy 10 watter does) and something which has some great tone, size isnt an issue really cos I won't lugging it round anywhere. THe GK has caught my eye because of the tone possibilites. Can you get some good tone out of that? Would you say it was worth its pretty large price tag when compared to some 400 watt amps that I could get for the same price?

The 150 is a great little practice and rehersal amp. It also is wonderfull in the studio.I originally bought it for my upright. It's hard to believe how rich it sounds with a Stingray for something that small. Can you take your bass to the store and try out the amp?It is nice to just grab a gigbag and that little amp and head out the door-keeps the lugging to an absolute minimum.I love mine and have been using it costantly for the last six or seven years now. Never had a problem.( edit) ....you will be amazed at how much that puts out with a Stingray.

Im not sure of anywhere around here that would stock it. I will have a look around, try and find the closest place to me with one. But if I cant, i'll have to rely on what others say...

In terms of volume? Sorry for nagging but I just want to check that I wouldnt be wasting a lot of money. Like I said, for me, tone is the major factor in all of this.

It will rattle the windows and furniture if you crank it out. Lots of useable tone....it sounds great with a Stingray. Also has xlr out for studio work .They were revolutionary when they were introduced but at this point they have been around for a while and others are also making small powerfull amps. They are a bit expensive but they pack quite the punch for their size.I have had no desire to replace it with anything else....unless maybe a Walter Woods was to come my way....

Tone versatility & Ashdown are peas in a pod. See if you can get to try one somewhere, you won't be disappointed.

What model do you own? I have been looking and have found the MAG C210T to be a good price, £150 cheaper than the GK. Are there a wide variety of tones available on the ashdowns? If I can get the tone im after, I really dont see the point in spending the extra £150.
