What are the tonal and theoretical differences between 6l6 power tubes and el-84s?

I've tried searching, but there are no direct comparisons I could find.

I'm curious what drastic (or not) change in tone would be if I changed tubes.

No worries, the amp has a bias switch. :)

well for the most part you're not going to replave 6l6's with el84's....you probably me EL3's.

EL34's give you that British sound, little more mids, warmer and rounder. 6L6's tend to be a bit more bottom endy and have some more headroom. That being said I'm suddenly taken with the tones I get from an EL34 powered amp. The 6L6's are a little more glassy.

EL84's are a low wattage tube that don't really offer the balls or chunk you're most likely looking for. PLus they usually aren't interchangable without servere bias adjustments. Peavey, Mesa and a few others utilize that bias switch for El34's and 6L6's...contact Bob at Eurotubes (www.eurotubes.com) and he'll tell you which tubes to work with your amp. As well you can obtain a set of tubes called an integrated quad (this is if you have a peavey ultra, triple x, or mesa recto) which are quad that consists of 2 el34's and 2 6l6's that are all of matched bias with which you run on the amp's el34 settting. It gets a little bit of both tube types inherent characteristics and make for great tone...good luck homey

Hmmm, Bob will suggest definatly JJ tubes.
At this time I own two Koch Powertones, one with 6550 powertubs, the other with EL34. I don't like that British tone, it's too harsh for me.
If you want super headroom AND EL34 tone, you must try JJ KT88. They have the 6550 kinda headroom but with EL34 characteristics.
Those matched INTEGRATED sets you can get at http://www.eurotubes.com. Normally matched sets you can get at http://www.tube-town.de.

The one thing about KT88's tho' is that they have some much headroom that you need to turn up to deafening levels.

Bob at eurotubes can get you anything you need and it's mad cheap too warg. Hook it up and rock!
