Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new amp right now and for the life of me, I can't decide.

I don't gig that much but I'm going away for school next year and I know I'm bound to meet some new people to play with. So it doesn't need to be crazy loud, but I guess some headroom for later on down the line. I was thinking 400-500W range?

I play a weird combination between funk (wow how many bassists do you hear say that), and progressive metal. I guess you can say I play fairly aggressively. With that being said I do want some flexibility because every now and then I do enjoy playing some jazz fusion. This isn't the focal point but I'm just trying to provide as much information as I can.

As for basses, I use a Bongo HH and a passive Fender Jazz. I really want it to compliment these basses.

The best way I could describe my current rig is by saying it sounds 'fake'. I'm using an Ashdown head and a TC cab. Don't ask me how I wound up with that combination. I'll be honest I like the sound of my bass on guitar amps over this current rig so I want to do something about it. I plan on selling this rig as soon as possible.

As for price range, I would like to stay below $1000 for my head. I guess cabinets would be the next thing too but at this current moment I want to get the head sorted out first because I feel it to be more important. Unless someone wants to prove me wrong.

The two I've been currently looking at are:
TC Electronic RH450 -mostly for it's features. That's all I ever hear people talk about are it's features. I hear great things about this head but I don't know how it sounds, especially with my Bongo. Size is great and probably fairly ideal. I wouldn't feel compelled to change my cabinet and it could work out beautifully. However, none of the bass players I'm familiar with have ever really used this head which is why it leaves me a little hesitant because I don't know if what I want could be done on this head.

GK Fusion 500 or MB 700 - I have always been under the impression that GK and Musicman are the perfect match. How true that is I'm not sure. The downside is the size of these heads and the fact I would need to go buy a compressor along with either of them + a new cab. I don't mind too much if it is the better sounding option.

Ultimately getting the best possible tone is my number 1 priority but having features here and there do help break the deal.

I just want as many suggestions as I can get. The music stores are fairly far from my house and they all sell completely different brands. So I would like to have an idea of what people say and from there figure out where I want to go to try out some stuff.

I expect you'll get a lot of Markbass recommendations here, although I haven't tried them.

Long time MarkBass andGK user... both fit the Bongo very well. The new Genz StreamLiners are also awesome for the $.

I've been hearing a lot of Markbass recommendations too. I didn't think really start looking into them.

I guess in your experience, how would you compare the two brands two each other?

I know it's probably the expected Markbass recommendation but the Markbass CMD102 combo really is great. It really does sound great with the Bongo and other basses. I want to get the smaller CMD112P combo just b/c it's easier to carry to small gigs but if you compare the two side by side, the 2x10 combo is much better sounding.

Dude, Gallien krueger... do yourself a HUGE favor & email musiciansfriend for a price quote & you would be amazed that they do way better than 15% off their prices.

Get the fusion

I have both MarkBass CMD102 and CMD112P with a New York 151 extension cab. If I have a gig at a small venue, the CMD112P suits my needs perfectly with my Bongos. For larger venues, I add the NY 151 cab. The CMD102 had a slightly different punch on the low B when I was in a '5 string' phase, but I'm just a 4 banger at heart. So the CDM102 isn't seeing much gig time lately. I know I'm not the only one around these parts that gets beautiful tone with a Bongo and MarkBass gear.

My name is Josh, I have the Bongo/Markbass combo and love it. I have tried it thru a lot of rigs but always came back to the Markbass. CMD102 is all you need, grab another 102 cab if you need 500 watts. Check the used Guitar Center website. Lots of them on there for great prices.

+1 on the Genz Benz Streamliner 900 well under $1000. Got mine for $775 brand new. Sounds amazing with any EBMM I've ever plugged in. I would suggest that you get both the head and cab at the same time if you can swing it.

Wow that is a lot of Markbass recommendations. I guess I should really go try some out. For you MB players, what kind of music are you guys playing? Do they have a distinct tone like GK does?

1 for GK which thankfully is sold at the same store as Markbass is. Guess that means I'm getting on that a.s.a.p.

and 2 for Genz Benz Streamliner. I guess I also want to know what kind of music you guys are playing with these? What sort of tones do they posses?

I am surprised there has been nothing on TC at all? I really am.

For what it's worth, I have a couple of GK's (one being the Fusion 500) and love the way MM sounds through them. Only Stingrays, though. The MB150E has some awesome features for a small combo (stereo chorus, limiter, etc.) and the extension cab is a very nice option and makes the set up extremely portable. The Fusion is a monster!

I have a Streamliner and do NOT recommend it unless you are looking for that particular sound with subtle upper mids bro. It really chops off the high end sizzle & is NOT aggressive tone.

I have a Streamliner & love it... but I dont think its what you're looking for. I play it with my Bongo HH 5 at church but I wont use it as my cover band amp

That being said the shuttlemax 9.2 genz benz is my favorite amp of all time. 2 channels (really 3 when you count the footswitch blend), 4 band EQ, footswitch mute, footswitch tone shapers... just plain ridiculous

I'll answer very quick'n'easy to Thread Question:

I tried several Bongos on several amps, ...Bongo works with any amp, ...You can complete any favorite tone with 3 or 4 band EQ (depends on Bongo model) with any amp, PA support, studio...etc.

Awesome! I haven't heard much about GK Combos to be completely honest. The only reason I'm a little hesitant about the Combo is because I don't want to compromise sound because of the size. Well not entirely. How would you compare the Fusion to the Combo and what kind of music do you play through your GK gear?

Just watched a couple vids on Youtube, it does sound pretty stellar. I will make an effort to go check these out!

Sure it will work, but that's about it. Like I said in my o.p. I much prefer my Bongo in guitar amps over my current rig which obviously sucks!

Phil Jones Bass M500/6T/9B cabs sound great

I will keep it in mind. Thanks!

..or you could get yourself a decent preamp a'la VTBass, Sadowsky or any of them with good reviews. That way you will always have "your" sound with you no matter whats availible.

imho the Markbass + Bongo combo is great - also have had good results with a Hartke LH head..which is well under your budget but worth considering (again imho)
