So I have been trying to land a job with a local working band. This would be a great gig if I can grab it. (decent pay, steady gigs, great musicians...) I would be replacing a bass player who had to relocate for work. So I try out for these guys, but I have not played thier style before. They like my playing but knew that I would need work. They did state, however, that I had the best bass sound they had ever heard. (SR4 HH and SUB SR4 thru a Mesa 400 w 4/10 and 1/5 cabs)

Well, the band finds out that the original bassist will not be leaving town after all. This guy already knows the material and can jump right back in. He had been out for two months. However, they wanted me to stay in the band. One of the main factors, according to them was my sound. The bass cut through like nothing they had heard before and wanted that to be part of thier sound. I am actually embarassed that my ability did not secure the job, but what a testament to my axe!!! (I gotta give props to the Boogie also!) I have never landed anything just because of my rig!

It is so nice to see that money has been well spent! Now I can earn some that back!!! Thanks EBMM for such supreme basses!!!

Those mesa bass amps are awesome. I have a750 Big Block with powerhouse 4x10 and 1x15 cabs. Mesa and Musicman Basses, what a combo! Hope things work out for you.

A lot of it is down to how you play and your fingers

And I guess they can see that while you may not be perfect now, with a bit of work your could easily make the grade and fit the band band perfectly

Seems a bit odd to choose you over the bassist they already had, unless there were a few issues with him or something

good luck with it

Thanks for the two cents everyone!! From what I understand, the other guy believed that a distorted tone fit everything. The Ramone's tune got the same tone as, say, Journey would. My downfall is that I had never really played in a working cover project, so I had to adjust my mind set a bit to play some else's music. So far, so good. My "final exam" should be this week.

Good job Sluggo. Playing is always fun and when you sound good, it makes it that much better. Keep up the good work.

Funny, I use my GK, Expanded/Noise Gate and EQ in my rig. Nice and clean. I play in a metal/hardcore band and every bassist in the audience always asks....why don't you use a distortion pedal with your set up. I tell them it is not needed and only masks bad playing (my opinion to those who use them...don't get all spun up...;) ) and when they hear the bongo with my rig....they understand. I get compliments on my tone all the time. I was told I am one of two people who goes with the clean sound in my genre of music around my parts....baffles me really, but cool none the less.

I do the same thing as far as playing clean. I don't really push the preamp, just a little growl . I also use the noise gate on my multi effects board, but I really wish I could find a better gate. "Clean is mean!" (I will crank the distortion for some old school Motorhead though!)

Sluggo-
Great news ..
With regards to playing other peoples stuff In cover bands..
This is what I do man..
Get the bands play list find the original recordings. Listen learn then add my self / style.. If I get away with myself / style part, you know no one picks up on it..
It's cool... Just have to be ready to transpose if in different key from original..
And I'm with you clean is cool.. I go from bass to amp with nothing between.

I hope you can use some of this to help close the job..
I wish you the best of luck..
