Another blown speaker report

Yes! And it's my first in 19 years of playing! Guess who's responsible ... Again, hired PA system, but this time there was a Fender 100W 1x15 bass amp for me. In the middle of the night, the amp stopped sounding and the Bongo only could be heard through the PA system. One of the roadies removed the amp's speaker cover and... Later they told me that it happened because of too much power, just as a comment. They didn't ask me to pay. I don't know... I've played at really high volumes before and nothing like that happened. Besides, when I arrived to the venue, the roadies proudly told me: "Just repaired. it's like brand new again"

. Anyway, whatever the reason, another Bongo victim.

100 watts isn't anywhere near enough to drive a 15" speaker in a live rock situation. I bet you had the amp and the Bongo dimed, and still had trouble hearing yourself, right?

Oh, I forgot to mention. It wasn't a rock gig (I'm missing them A LOT ). That's what I like to play the most, but unfortunately there's not enough market for that here. It was a gig with a tropical music band in an indoor venue and I didn't have so much problems hearing myself (before the amp failure), but it was that kind of place in which, no matter how hard you try to cut bass frequencies (within the reasonable limits, of course), the bass is always heard as an unintelligible boom boom on stage. Very annoying!

He was running it through a PA I thought that should be fine... as long as you can hear yourself on stage

Too much power? More likely not enough power. What happens is the amp begins to distort....and a hundred watts is not much for bass....the distortion works on the speaker and boom, things come to a sudden stop.

You're much less likely to blow a speaker while using higher powered amps because there is less distortion.

I regularly run 1200 watts into a 4-10 cabinet that is probably rated for 500 watts, although I am guessing at that....but I never have any problems because the signal is clean and the amp is barely breaking a sweat.

The other thing that occurs to me is that a 15" speaker won't begin to sound right until you get way out in front of it. So there you are on stage, thinking you're not making a lot of noise while way in back, some guy is spontaneously evacuating his bowels.....I like 15" speakers, but 10" or 12" speakers don't take so long to "develop" and you get a much better idea onstage of what's hitting the crowd.

Feel so envy, Jack! Never had so much power for me. What amp(s) do you have? Many people ask me: So, if you have such a great bass, why don't you invest in a great amp? I know I should, but I feel unmotivated because a big bass amp will most likely left in hands of the roadies and the so-called "roadies" here aren't careful with instruments and I still don't know the first that had assumed the costs of a damage because most of the times they're so poor guys.

Lo que uso yo es el "Sunn 1200s" que tiene tanto poder.

Y tambien tenemos que pensar de los gabinetes, como se dice en espanol? Estoy hablando de los parlantes....tu sabes.

No se que haria yo si fuera en tu posicion, tambien noto que es bastante dificil encontrar cosas en sudamerica....me acuerdo que una vez, cuando vivia en el peru, hablaba con un amigo que tenia una estudio, le pregunte, "Que haces cuando necesitas algo, instrumento o lo que sea, para tu estudio? A donde vas?"

Y el me dijo - " A Miami."

Eso fue cuando me di cuenta que no estaba en los EEUU, no?

No, and I'd turned it down if it was clipping, for sure. That's why I insist that the real problem was the "repairment".

Makes sense to me. I just figured clipping would be the main thing a Bongo did and if the PA had enough bass well.....


We could go younger here like we never seen nineteen and just say Hey the Bongo Rulz!!!
