There is a great rant posted by Steve Lukather on TGP that is spot on and besides his his God given talent as one of the greatest players of all time, this is another reason I am a big Luke fan. The guy is never shy to say what is on his mind and tells it like it is! If you are over 40 these days on TGP you are considered a Dinosaur lol, and all the teenagers to early twenty guys know a lot more about the music business then people like Luke and Neil Young! Instead of taking the advice of someone who has done it all and is trying to give a heads up, the majority of that age group only hits back with arrogance.http://www.thegearpage.net/board/in...ather-comment-on-streaming-media-etc.1598719/

Great Post by Luke
I absolutely agree with him. I kinda miss the days when i spent weeks to figure out Songs just by listening or going through my Dad's CD Collection. He had one CD Rack with all the Records Luke played on ! :D
The Technology in the last few Years made a lot of things easier, but it also made it harder for Studio Musicians to get work. Just because every Idiot can afford a Macbook and Cubase and record everything at home. S#&%t like EZDrummer, Autotune... Don't get me started...
It's sad that so many great Artists don't get Support from Records Companys because they don't fit in the Mainstream. It's all about Show and being more shocking than another "Artist".. Cyrus, Gaga etc...

I could write on for Hours.
Luke nailed it.
That's it

I think EZ Drummer is a godsend. I live in a place where music is effectively dead, but EZ Drummer allows me to create music without owning a massive drum kit and tons of expensive recording equipment. I strive to write and record original music because it is my passion. If it weren't for YouTube, Forums and computer programs the world may have been deprived of guys like Misha Mansoor.

EZDrummer is a cool tool for writing and coming up with Ideas. I used Superior Drummer for my Demos too.
But Software like that is used too often these days for Commercial Records IMO.
It's fine id you can't afford a Big Kit or Recording Studio. But the Big Studios shouldn't use Software Drums just because it's easier and cheaper to do. The Real Magic in Music Happens when there's a Full Band Playing together and nailing a Song in one Take.

That would be a blessing :D , for Gods sake, nothing against the guy but I can't stand that noise those guys make and all the kids treating them like gods and bashing guys like Angus Young.

The whole streaming music thing is amazing. The artists make zilch and youtube, spotify, etc make SERIOUS bank.

I'm always astounded how many illegally uploaded full albums are on youtube. I can't believe youtube hasn't cracked down on that. I have free music on Soundcloud, but I don't have it available for download, only streaming. Still, if someone wanted to download it (not that anyone would), but it would be a breeze.

Not that this is related in away - but we talk about technology and how it changes things. I play in a 6 piece band. Four of us are just over 60 yo, one is lower 50's and one mid 40's.

Us older guys grew up prior to MTV and learned our chops and covers by mostly by ear and slowing down 33 rpm records. Music was something you listened to, not watched. You would form your impression, like and dislike on what it sounded like and there was a bunch left open to the imagination and learning left up to interpretation.

The younger guys grew up with music being visual - watched more than listened to. Several times they have NOT wanted to cover song suggestions based on the video (bad video, video ruined career, they dressed horrible etc). Arguably great songs, just presented badly visually.

Not that one is better or worse than the other - I am just glad I grew up when I did :)

Cheers

That is fascinating. Definitely a different world. I still teach lessons from time to time and I find it interesting that I show a young student scales and we try to improvise with it. The mere concept of a "solo" is mind boggling since modern music isn't in the mindset that we grew up with. You know.... the bridge is over...time for a guitar solo. Some kids can't even comprehend what they are even trying to do. Those days are gone and I agree, not better or worse, just different. Older music definitely has a more human feel than most modern anything.
