Another nut question (SR5)

<div class="bbWrapper">I have noticed My SR5 the A &amp; D slots are cut deep enough so that the strings are all the way down in the slot. If you took a straight edge or one that would follow the curve of the nut it would not touch the string. The E string is also way down it&#039;s just barely over the grove. I thought the string should be in the groove only about half way.<br /> BTW I have TI flats on there and I love them. I will keep those. <br /> <br /> So the questions are;<br /> <br /> 1. Does it matter?<br /> 2. If it does what should I replace it with ( Bone Graphtech) <br /> <br /> Or should I shut up and play <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f600.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt=":D" title="Big grin :D" data-smilie="8"data-shortname=":D" /></div>

I have a guitar set up book that says the the strings should just be in the grove about 1/3-1/2 the string thickness. <br /> <br /> I also am lusting over this Natural SR5 that just came in a local shop and the strings are just about like it says in that book. <br /> <br /> I can&#039;t leave anything alone I am always tweeking.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Changing the nut doesn&#039;t give you that &quot;Bang for the buck&quot; improvement other mods do, in my opinion. (Ie: On my acoustic guitar, changing the saddle and bridge pins produced a dramatic improvment in sustain and tone, whereas guitars I&#039;ve heard after a nut replacement have sounded the same.) If the strings aren&#039;t buzzing or jumping out of the groove, I would advise against taking chisel to neck, if you get my drift. Sustain on our SR&#039;s comes from that massive bridge (plus brass inserts if I&#039;m correct), and the awesome neck joint. You won&#039;t do much better than that. My Lakland has a bone nut and a 35&quot; scale and believe me, the SR &quot;B&quot; string is right there with it. (<i>Tight</i> and full baby) Ok.....I&#039;m done.</div>

I found my sound. Wow it is the best thing I ever held in my hands next to my new born kids or wife. <br /> <br /> I then started reading this forum. Seen a lot of questions so I started looking at it. Yep it looks like what you describe. It plays like buttah. It is wood ever seen two pieces that were the same? Are human born twins really identical? <br /> <br /> I am as down to the fine line as they come on some things. A bass isn&#039;t built for fine lines it is built to play fine lines on. <br /> <br /> IMHO<br /> <br /> tk</div>
