Hey guys,

I've been lurking around this forum for about a week now and have finally had the chance to register. I've been in the market for a new guitar for the past month or so, specifically a seven string. I already own a couple of Ibanez S-Series six strings and figured the Universe line would be the way to go for me. I wanted something with a little more meat on it than the S-Series for it has a very thin body. I've owned some RG series guitars in the past so I am well aware of the tone the larger body gives. Well, the more I looked at the Universe, the less I liked it. To me, it isn't that much different than Ibanez's RG line for the exception of better pickups, a different neck, and some color schemes that really don't appeal to me. As good as a guitar player Steve Vai is, I'm really not too wild about his choice in designs used in his line of guitars.

So here I am reading up on the Music Man JP7, and so far I haven't heard many negative comments about the line. Unfortunately, there isn't a dealer in the 60 mile radius from me that has a JP7 in stock to try and my local dealer currently doesn't even have any JP6 models in stock. So here I am eagerly waiting to find a JP7 to try. Do you guys have any suggestions? Should I take advantage of places like Musician's Friend who has a 45 day return policy on their products? When my local dealer does get their JP6s in stock, will the JP6 give me a good taste of what to expect with the JP7?

Welcome, maybe another forumite with a JP7 lives near you?
Otherwise the MF-return policy seems to be a good idea.

Btw. nearly all EBMM´s have very small bodies, which does not affect the sound. On pics they look very regular, but when you hold them in hands or see them, you will be surprised how small an AXIS, or a Morse is (also disussed lately here somewhere). Together with the small/short headstock it IS small!

The JP7 isn't much different from the JP6. Obviously, the neck is wider. Otherwise, it should feel the same. The bridge pickup is oriented differently in the two guitars, though. I'm planning on getting a JP7 at some point.

Welcome.

If you are already used to 7-string guitars (which I am not) and like the Petrucci model, I see know reason why you wouldn't love the JP7.

FYI, I ordered my first EBMM guitar, the Silhouette Special, without ever playing one. It turned out to be the best instrument purchase I ever made. EB Customer service will help you find the guitar you are looking for (color, options, etc...) by directing you to dealers across the US. Musician's Friend I am sure is OK, but their selection is kind of limited.

Ok guys... so I was able to track down a dealer about an hour from me who had a JP6 in stock. So I got out of work early, went home to get the wife, and took a little road trip to Pittsburgh.

When we arrived, I immediately saw the glow of the Desert Gold finish from across the room. I only had about an hour to try it out but I will say that as soon as I wrapped my hand around the neck, I was in love. The finish on the neck is unbelievable! I can't even describe why. I'm so used to playing guitars with some sort of poly finish and the raw feel that this neck really makes playing much more enjoyable. I didn't get a chance to play through some high gain but I'm already well aware what this guitar is capable of in terms of sound. I spent most of the time just getting used to the feel. The body is really comfortable to play compared to my Ibanez S-Series guitars and the neck profile is so much better then the Wizard necks in my opinion. It really gave something for my thumb to grab onto while playing some faster runs. I also got a the chance to plug it into an acoustic amp and try out the Piezo. What a wonderful sound this thing is capable of! I thought I'd never see the use in one but I can now see how useful it would be in a gig scenario.

Overall, I am extremely impressed. The JP6 really reminds me of the G&L Legacy I had a few years ago in terms of build quality. The Ibanez guitars I am so used to can't even come close. It feels like a tank yet extremely nimble. I'm really surprised to how light it is but I'm guessing it is due to the basswood.

The only thing I wasn't sure about was the trem tension. When I did some pull-offs in the lower position on the heavier strings, I could actually hear the trem vibrate as if I was "flicking" the trem bar, kind of like Steve Vai does to achieve his "kitten" sound. Could this be remedied by adding additional springs to the trem? Or maybe by stringing it with my usual choice of 10 gauge strings?

My local dealer is supposed to receive a few JP6s sometime this week so I'm going to spend a little more time playing one. But so far, I think I'm sold. In addition to the seventh string, I think I found a new favorite guitar. :) I just can't decide on what finish to get, although the Desert Gold was quite beautiful. :)

Here are some picture my wife snapped on her cell phone while I was trying it out:

I tried a forum members JP7 for about 5 seconds and I knew immediately it wasn't for me. The neck was so much wider it threw everything else off for me.

I'm sticking to 6 strings myself.
