I've finally taken the plunge and removed the EMGs from my Luke. My new pickups should arrive Monday so I will try to post a pic and let you all know how I have got on.

I don't really want to get into a discussion about EMG vs Passive, but I'm going to put forward my point of view anyway :)

Basically I have got on perfectly with the Luke for about 3 years now. I only ever used it live through a POD or a modelling amp through the PA. It was great. Anyway, along comes my second Ball in the form of my SS and a new amp (Marshall JVM- yep I'm shocked I spent my hard earned money on a Marshall too!!).

I find the EMGs to be too high output and far too bright. I think with a lot of modern valve amps (which are brighter and have more gain on tap) there is some sense in having a pickup which doesnt pump the pre-amp as much. My SS with stock pickups sounds much warmer and fat.

I'm hoping my Luke is going to become my main guitar again because it is the best hunk of wood I have ever had- it has the nicest neck and the best body shape (IMO).

Pickups I have ordered: Little 59 for neck and a couple of Bare Knuckles (Can't say enough about BKPs- I phoned up and spent a good 20 mins talking to the boss himself about my options, and he is going to make me a SC to fit the existing route)

Will keep you posted...

Good luck, I would have just gotten a Silhouette Special...

To me the EMG's are what make the Luke a Luke.

I really don't agree that the EMGs make the Luke the guitar it is. Its the unique looking body and the neck. The pickups are just pert of the means by which we hear the guitar.

And yep, I have the SS- I don't want another one! Not yet anyway- maybe I might get another for a 3 single coil set up...

By the way, I didnt mean that the neck was unique looking- I mean the neck profile felt unique and the body looked unique... doh :)

+1 on the Bare Knuckles people - they really know their stuff! Plus the package you get with the pickups is first class. Spare strings and everything!

Hope you are enjoying your new Balls. :D

I'm going the opposite way - from passive to active. I just today installed my EMG-VG20 system (3-single coils) that has a "SPC Presence control for extra output and crunch", and so far I love it! It can both quack and rock.

I like that each of my (many) guitars sound slightly different from each other - except for two identical guitars I have that I bought just because I wanted each color. Eventually I'll change the pups on one of them.

You arent the first to do this, Dodgeball put a Bare Knuckles Crawler and 2 Slowhands into his Luke and it sounds terrific. In fact I'm thinking of doing something similar as I have two Lukes...but maybe go for the Crawler/Mothers Milk combo. I love the Lukes looks, shape and neck so it'll also be nice to get that passive pickup response out of one of them...

So overall you are happy with the new tones?

The sounds are great! My Luke has become my fave guitar again, relegating my Silo Spec to second place. For now...
