Hi all,

Newbie here, after 20 odd years of playing basically exclusively passive Fender basses I’ve just purchased a lovely Stingray!

While I wait for one more of Leo’s designs to arrive at my doorstep I was wondering if you MM-gurus could share any wisdom with me about my new bass. For your information: she’s a 1996 4H in Natural, supposedly in near-mint condition.

What are some of the things I should know? I’m interested in anything from setup tips to any weaknesses in the design or parts you may know of.

Thanks in advance and I’ll be sure to post my own pictures and a first impression when the bass arrives!

Greetings from the Netherlands!

Yeah, musical instruments are usually almost human to me.
Well OK. Tickle her a few inches below the neck. That will make her moan or scream, depending on your technique. Twiddle her knobs and the sounds will change. Thaz pretty much all there is to it.

Congrats on the bass! I love the look of the natural finish Stingrays. I’m a recent music man bass owner so I am interested in the answers to this thread.

Since this is an active bass you don’t want to leave it plugged in for long periods when you’re not playing it to avoid depleting the battery. I’ve accidentally left other guitars with active pick ups plugged in for a few days and have been surprised with no output when I pick them up to play. Also remember to have extra batteries on hand in case you need them.

I’m curious, how does your Stingray compare contrast to your Fender basses?

Another newbie here. I have a MIA fender Jazz, of which the dead zone on fret 6/7 on the G-string was very noticeable and irritating. After two tweaks to the truss rods, I'm still not that happy with the string relief. I may have to have another go. I then bought a basic Sterling, just to play with, and then replaced the pickup with a Seymour Duncan ALNICO and an East 2-band preamp, and I really liked it! I found it was not easy to get the softer sound of the Jazz and bought the 2006 HH. This gives me all the flexibility I'll ever need - I just wish my playing did it justice! Having said that, the modded Sterling is still a favourite.
