I've got an audition tomorrow evening for a band looking for a rhythm guitarist. I think I'm covered on the gear side as the Balls have been re-strung, power tubes in the Boogie replaced this week, have extra sets of strings, all the necessary guitar tools. Anyone think of anything else I may need?

How about advice for the 'mental' side of things? While I've been in other bands, they were with family or friends and there was no audition. This is a first for me, so I have no idea how I'll respond. I've been practicing the song list and feel comfortable, but that's in my living room. If you have any suggestions or any experiences you'd care to share, thanks in advance.

I would go in with the attitude that if this door is meant to be opened it will happen. I've found that if i apply too much pressure on myself then i don't play my best...

relax, play and have fun... i think if you go in stressed out that will convey a lack of confidence to the other band mates...

just make sure when you set up... you're able to do so quickly and be tuned and make minor adjustments as needed...

Best of luck with the audition...

Coupla basics:-

Be on time

Set up quickly and without fuss

Be relaxed - You KNOW you can play the songs

Be interested in their band - Ask them about what they do, how often they play?, how often they rehearse?, what sort of gigs do they do?, where are they planning to take it in the future?

Ask them what exactly they are looking for in the new guitarist? - What are the important aspects to them? - In that way you can sell yourself against the things that are important to them.

Be lucky!:D

Agrees with all of the above. I'd just add, be genuine, be yourself.

Also remember that you are auditioning them. It creates a level playing field and builds confidence.

Have fun!

Jump around a lot and be really active, and stick your tounge out like Gene Simmons at every opportunity.

OK lets really distill this audition thing

1. Laugh at every single joke that the lead singer makes.

2. Do not tell any jokes that are funnier than the ones that the lead singer tells.

3. Ask the lead singers chick if she can hear the vocals ok

4.everytime the lead singer just give a nod of approval and a confident smile.

5. Tell the lead singer that you like thai food also.

6. When lead singer isnt looking make a sour face at the bass player and drummer that is aimed at the lead singer

Hahaha you guys are nuts! :D

In all seriousness (as serious as I'm capable of), here's how I see it:

1. Be on time.

2. Be able to set up your gear quickly, with no drama and ensure it works as it's intended; gear probs make a bad first impression.

3. Be IN TUNE. So many people aren't.

4. Be able to play your parts compitently.

5. Enjoy yourself, don't be to stiff and stair at your fingerboard the whole time.

Good luck!

If you start to get stage fright, concentrate on the rhythm of your breathing and just let the music flow. I've had to do several college auditions on trumpet, and it's only a stressful experience if you make it one. Just go and have fun.

And good luck! :)

If you're auditioning to be the rhythm guitarist, don't play louder or faster (or better) than the lead guitarist. Once you're "in", the positions will sort themselves out.....

And just remember, it is all for fun - it's gotta be fun or else it is just work, dressed up in a different set of clothing. If they are interested enough in giving you an audition opportunity, they must think you will be a good fit....
