Well I am about to pull the trigger on an Axe-Fx Ultra!!!:D Going on a holiday to California pretty soon and will be buying it direct from a guitar shop there. Anyhoo, I am wondering if anyone here has experience with the ART SLA II Solid state poweramp. I will be powering 2- 2X12 mesa cabs (set up in stereo). currently I have a mesa 2:90 but it is a heavy son of a gun, and waaay to powerful for my needs...not sure if i really need it (bit overkill for my needs) and I really never have it loud enough to get the sound qualities of driving the tubes at loud volumes. I don't gig or play in a band...basically just bedroom levels, occasional jam etc...

I am considering the ART SLA II (200 watts each channel)

thoughts?

I dont own an axe fx but Ive played through one and it was running through an art sla 2 into three cabs one dry cab and two cabs for wet from an eventide eclipse , the axe fx was simply incredible the sound and playing feel were both amazing

there was a slo 100 and a bogner ecstasy in the room and the axe fx was indistunguishable . awesome bit of kit , but anyway
yes the art is pretty good , I owned a art sla 1 and used it to power by wet signal from an eventide H3000 , its very nice bit of kit the art poweramp and its powerful .... the art is quite a heavy amp but not quite as heavy as the boogie
I would LOVE to hear an axe fx ultra through a mesa 2:90

Lots of folks on the AxeFx forum use the SLA. Though I've turned to full range amplification I started with an SLA-1 into a stereo 2x12. Sounded good enough but my QSCs are more portable and more versatile since most people turn off cab sims when playing through a guitar cab. I run through some Mackie near field monitors when I don't need to move air.

I've used mine with several different poweramps. Currently I am running it thru a Crate powerblock.

I actually use the axe-fx with the power amp you mentioned, and i think it would work just fine. It's been more than enough to play venues and great for at home work as well.

Hmm, Do you use it to power actual cabs or FRFR monitors? My understanding is that it will work with either...I currently have mesa 212 cabs that I plan on using, but have noticed many using FRFR such as the Atomic reactor series. Not sure if I'll go there but might consider it down the road.

Also, if you use cabs, how did you manage with the banana plugs on the back of the ART? did you end up using an adapter or just buy a speaker cable wire 1/4" to banana plug end?

I had the very setup you are buying. The SLA-2 is a great, quality power amp. Very clean, allot of AxeFX users prefer them over anything else. I had good results with Carvin as well. It's not overwhelmingly powerful, but sounds like you are not looking for that anyways. Can't beat the price either at $299.99. I loved the AxeFX Ultra, but I loved my Mark V even more. Couldn't justify that much $$$ to use as an effects processor only, so I decided to sell it. One day I may get another. They are very, very cool and fun to use. Hope this helps you out, good luck!

If you're going to be using the Axe-Fx at bedroom levels, I'd suggest getting a pair of small FRFR speakers. A good set of studio monitors or smaller powered PA speakers would suit you well. And you wouldn't have to deal with a power amp at all in that case.

At home I plug my AFX Ultra into my Yamaha HS80M studio monitors. At rehearsal I use QSC K12 powered PA speakers to get the extra volume.
