EBMM Forumite Youtube Repository

As EBMM has so many options to choose from pickup configuration wise and such, I can imagine that most people don't always have the opportunity to try before making the plunge. I was wondering if anyone thinks that it would be a good idea to put together a sound library. I at least think it would be a great collaborative project for all of us.

Below are the configurations we'd need (of course any fretless version of the configurations below would be very welcome). Duplicates of instruments already submitted are also welcome. My only request is that the videos not just consist of slapping. PM me if you have a video you'd like to add. Thanks.

Only hard part is control of the recordings. I'd think we'd need everyone to just go direct to a DAW with no tone shaping at all. I'll glady do my Sterling 5H, Sterling 5HH and Bongo 5HH if we wanted. I'm a hack though too, so it won't be anything fancy.

If you guys are doing this, you should all use one standard riff. For comparison sake.

where do we upload?

sign me in for bongo 4 H/S and bongo 5H/H

here's what i think...

Bongo 4 Bridge...finger...slap...pick
Bongo 4 Neck.....finger...slap...pick
Bongo 4 Both......finger...slap...pick

that's 9 for one bass, without piezo
i think it's quite enough, so i propose FLAT EQ, as straight as it gets

also, i don't like the idea of one riff...could be quite boring after a while.

people should just play what they usualy play in tha particular position

also this:

7. If strings other than stock are used, also please specify.

could be crucial, so i'd keep this rule

If I may play devil's advocate....

These kinds of things are very popular and I've used similar things myself (basstasters' comparos of preamps). However, I'm no longer a fan of the concept because there are too many variables out there in real life. What you hear has little relevance beyond saying "yep... this one sounds different than that one."

My Bongo H has taught me that there is HUGE tonal variation to be found in technique and right hand position. How can you truly control that? And if you specify where to put your hand and how to play the riff for standardization purposes, then what good is it if your preferred technique is to do something different?

Same with EQ. What good is listening to a standardized EQ setting if your preferences never take you there?

IMHO exercises like this can be very misleading. Inevitably you judge based on what you hear even if it's not representative of your actual use scenario. It's the old stereo store dilemma... when people go to buy a stereo they usually wind up choosing the speakers that are the most highly colored because they stand out in comparison to all others... when the best choice is the ones that are the most accurate. The same thing leads newbs to scoop their EQ to death, because that sounds "good" when they're playing in the bedroom.

You're correct. Even if a single person were to record all of the clips necessary, it still would be misleading because it's not necessarily how you'd approach the instrument. I remember one thing I didn't like about Basstasters is that the clips were misleading due to variances in level. If you had two similar preamps recorded at different levels, the one that was recorded at a higher level would be perceived as better.

Everything adouglas said stands. But I still think that it is a great idea and i'd still do it.
First of all, it would not be an official sound library.
I've watched all Ed Friedland's videos, he often if not always plays a Genz, and i still find his reviews very helpful.

If it gets made, it should say that it was made by the customers "because we wanted to".

If there was one, i'd listen to it today.

So, i'm in. If you decide on the rules, PM me, i'll do my part to help.

I think if anything it would be fun and interesting. I agree as well that Ed Friedland's reviews have helped. It's true that you'll compare and be able to say that something sounds different, not necessarily better. However, I'm just interested in hearing those differences and perhaps to some it may still help.

I dig stuff like this and don't think its a bad idea. Yep there are of course some variables as well.
It have some EBMM and SBMM basses that have been modded with other components and it would be interesting to A/B the differences.

Count me in if you need some files.

I agree with A Douglas, but would also be interested in this.

Did you guys know Oli has already posted soemthing similar for a whole batch of different models of Stingrays - worth checking out the thread - I think it's called sound samples??

So I updated the list with who's interested in doing what. Let me also ask, would you guys prefer to make Youtube videos instead? Perhaps we can just have more fun with it that way and can just make this a collection of Youtube demonstrations. What do you all think?

this would be the obvious choice. either with video, or with pics of the bass in question.

as we all know...no pics...no bass...no sound clips

I was just on the Lakland site listening to some of their sound samples, the whole time wishing EBMM had the same thing. Same person recording the same riffs (for a bunch of different genres for those that haven't seen it) for all their basses, with both rounds and flats. I dont ever see anything but SR4's and SR5's in my area, so it's always nice to be able to hear what people can get out of other Musicman basses.
