To the Group -

I know that the OLP SR copy is not (nor is it meant to be) on par with the Ray. That said, does anyone on here own one or more? If you do, what do you do with it?

* Hot-rod it?
* Play it as a backup?
* Take it to gigs that aren't "good enough" for your Stingray?

I don't really care for it but I am very open to learning how/where the true EB fanatics use it in their arsenals.

Not bashing here -- I'm really curious.

I know someone that has one, he used it to get used to a 5 string before buying a more expensive 5er. His is for sale now, but he said it was decent for the price. Heavy though, i think.

On the bassplayer.com forums right now, there's a pretty active thread started by someone who got 'turned on' to the OLP's when a Fender of his went into the shop and he needed a back-up bass. Might want to check it out.

Myself, I was more than impressed with the quality when I was turned on by their 4-strings.

BTW, anyone here can compare the OLP's to the SUB's ? Any thoughts?

Friend of mine just got the Levin model. He's very happy with it, doesn't intend to 'trade up' because it does the job for him; mind you he uses it only when he needs the low stuff. I tried it out for a few minutes and it seemed perfectly ok, but I didn't have my own SR5 there to do a direct comparison.

I have the OLP Tony Levin 5'er and really like playing it. As some of you know, I had to upgrade the active EQ and nut, but it is a very solid bass and plays very well. It sounds great with the Duncan preamp and original OLP pickup. I've played it a few times at gigs, but mostly use it at home for enjoyment and to get used to the 5 string setup. I'm sure I will use it more often at shows as I become more comfortable with it.

I bought an OLP as my third bass to learn how to play a 5er. It doesn't come close to my new SR5, but it served it's purpose. I still keep it, even though it was a casuality of hurricaine Katrina <that b---!> I keep it in case I learn enough to fix it. It is a bit heavier thand the sr5. All in all, for the price, it was worth it to make sure I was ready for the 5er.
