Hey.

I'm toying with the idea of having the painted neck on my SUB stripped of its paint, on the headstock too. I don't mind how it plays, but painted necks have never really been for me. As it stands I'll live with it but if I can customise it into being that one step closer into another dream axe then hey, why not?

Anyone got any major concerns? Will the paint have bonded with the wood underneath to create little green monsters? Any horror stories to tell? Or any stories of people successfully doing things similar (either on a SUB, or another neck)? Will I ever stop this endless list of questions?

One of my major concerns though sad (I know) is the fact that along the process I'd lose the EBMM logo. Anyone know where a logo transfer could be found? I've seen ones on fleabay before for other brands.

Cheers!

Yeah I got a warning. Use the oil and wax treatment and let us know how it turns out.:)

I'm with norm on this one. In my grand tradition of canning my MM's warranty within 2 weeks of taking delivery of it, I stripped my SUB (which I'm regretting a little that I sold lately) and oiled it. it's a good piece of wood under there. had a nice feel.

Awesome, what kind of oil/wax/whatever did you use? I think I trust myself enough not to screw this up.

I'm a bit undecided about what to do about the headstock, I might go to some place that prints signs and see what they can do for me in the name of decals.

Jist strip the back of the headstock, and leave the front black.

Yes, I agree, except I would go one step further and say leave the whole headstock black. You know how on the Maple neck EBMMs, the headstock is finshed with a clear coat, but the neck isn't? Well, that's what I'd do in this chase. Tape the back of the neck where the headstock is, and sand the neck up to the tape. That way, you will have a nice straight line. Also, you won't have to dick with taking the tuners off, and getting a new EBMM logo.

I did it with my Hamer Steve Stevens 2. Lots of fun but a bit scary too. I left the headstock the origional colour cause it was easy. I did not have the wax/oil finish to hand so I ssanded the whole thing with a light grade paper and finished in Holland oil.

Feels good, but not the oil/wax feel.

Jonny.

If I'm after the same feel as that of my EBMM Silhouette which oil should I be looking for?

I like the idea of doing the back and sides of the headstock but leaving the front the same. Although if it turns out to be too much hassle I might take your idea on board nobozos.

Cheers!

Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil and Wax are the standard for EBMMs. There's some info on the FAQ on the site on how to apply them. Or search the threads. B-C also makes a conditioner that's excellent - Tommy (another member here) put it on my Morse neck when he stripped off the lacquer for me.

Up to you, but the style of the other guitars is to have the back of the headstock lacquered and just the playable back of the neck oil/wax'd. Does seem like that would be easier to do.

Whatever you do, I'm sure it'll feel awesome. Good luck!

I've just done the neck of my Albert Lee with the Birchwood Casey Tru oil and wax.
It gives a great finish but BEWARE - it has altered the feel of the neck dramatically.
The neck is now buffed to a sheen because of the wax treatment whereas before it was more of a matt finish [ nothing like a matt finish I keep telling the wife ;-) ]

I'm getting used to it.

Also if you use the tru oil, dab it on with a cloth, not too much, I'll say that again NOT TOO MUCH, wipe it after a couple of hours and then use the wax.
I Know that Tommyin delaware has used the gun stock conditioner too.

My Les Paul has the original black painted neck and it feels great !!
Just my 2 pence worth.

I believe I used holland oil. the guy who works on my guitars gave it to me and I've since lost the bottle.

I left the entire headstock black because I sanded it by hand and by the end, frankly, just got lazy.
