I just got a tone zone shipped to me and are waiting for my air norton to come so I can wire them up, does anybody have an idea of how this combo will be for the ax40, I know its not the same as axis pups, but will it be good for a 90s van halen sound? I tried the AT1 and did think it was a bit weak, i wired it by itself and left the ax40 neck pup in, and it was much quieter and less output than the ax40 neck, very unbalanced, so im waiting for the air norton to wire the tonezone with, ive heard they are a good match.

I've always dug the Tone Zone. One of my favorite pickups.

I use an Air Norton and a Tone Zone in my Silhouette Special. EXCELLENT combo. As far as the TZ goes, it's a very full, round and smooth sound that's got just the right amount of output and body but it's got clarity as well. My Silo is on the bright side and the TZ helps fill out the sound very nicely.

The Air Norton is THE pickup to pair with it - one of the all-time great neck pickups.

i´m using the tonezone in my Y2D PDN2012 - with this wood combination, the original PUP didn´t have enough low-end for me, so the tonezone was an option - this guitar screams and has the right amount of low-end now.
have had this PUP years ago in some jackson and charvel guitars and they always sounded great with this PUP.

Hello

A few years ago, I built a guitar (with the help of a luthier).
The body and neck are mahogany, the fretboard ebony, and the pickups Air Norton and Tone Zone :

The pickups are very hot and with the mahogany body, the sound is quite huge. Perfect for distortion. But with a valve amp, it can be difficult to have a "perfect clean" sound : the pickups are so hot that you overdrive easily the preamp tubes. Thus you have to lower a bit the volume of the guitar or lower the gain of the clean channel.
But for distortion, it's great :D

tone zone is an amazing pickup, very responsive to how you play
I pair it with a Humbucker From Hell (and an area 61) in one of my old RG's
still the best sounding guitar I have.

thinking about throwing this same setup in one of my JP6's

I cant wait to hear this pickup combo! It sounds like you guys are saying its deep but clear, and the air norton, hot,but creamy. I have read many reviews and heard lots of demos, and i think the basswood will accentuate the sound of these pickups, i was weary after hearing reports of the tone zone being muddy , but i just think it will kick ass for my style, and i play a lot of Evh style soloing, and cant wait, ill tell you how I like it when my air norton comes and i wire the pair up.

The TZ is actually my favorite DiMarzio bridge pickup. I think it gives a nice low to mid sound. You can't go wrong with the TZ.

I play a JP6 dargie II most of the time now, but every time I go back to the RG (with the TZ/HFH), it's just so open sounding, its how I want my sound to sound. the dynamics aren't there with the JP6 pickups, but I'm chicken to swap them out in that guitar. I had an Air Norton in before very creamy, and almost too hot (always seemed louder than the bridge). I wanted more of a 'stratty' neck sound which I can come a little closer with the HFH.

I've had a lot of experience with many Dimarzio pickups. I personally do not like the T Zone due to the fact that it is not musical at all (in my opinion). I run it thru a variety of Marshal amps when I play.

Powerful, absolutely yes, it will completely destroy anything in its path without flinching, but without any inclination to style or musical notes.

In my Van Halen trib I yanked the T Zone out and dropped in a Norton (not air) in the bridge pickup - oh, what a delight, not only powerful and punchy but also very colorful! Comparable to a hot rodded PAF pickup.
