Hey everybody, I play two different Peavey Millenium basses. One is going to be kept with rounds on it, but I need to set the other one up with flats.

I only use Super Slinkies for guitar strings, but I've never used the bass strings before. I'm looking at the ones going from .040-.095

I've tried the following in the past;

Fenders (old and new design) New ones are better than old, but I think they could still be better.

GHS Precision flats-nice playing flat, but a little too tame for me; nice punchy, like the Fenders.

TI Jazz flats-good quality string, but not the sound I'm looking for (I'd like a more traditional sounding string)

D'addario Chromes-I liked them 20 years ago when I first tried them. But they seem to have changed over the last 7 or 8 years. They don't sound very punchy to me, and I've had a few start coming apart.

Thanks for your opinions.

I just had a thought, I have never brought Flatwounds!?

I have used close to every string brand avai' over my 25+ years but I've never brought Flats, is that strange?

I have noticed your looking for 40-95's, man that is a light set of strings, EB make a set that light "Group iv" but man are you sure? It's not a lot of mass or tension to work with

Some people say they are just like D'addario chromes, do you guys agree with that?

I'm planning to try the Group IV flats-I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

They're close to Chromes, but not quite. Chromes have a zing that never goes away. To me, the EBs occupy a space between the Chromes and GHS, which have a very vintage thump to my ears. The EB flats mellow very nicely, but don't get too muddy. I've had a set on a bass for over two years now. I picked up two sets on clearance at my local GC for about $15/ea.
