hi guys, I was wondering if maybe someone knows what distortion pedals John used on the dvd. Obviously he didn't use his midi controller, I saw he had only few stompboxes under his feet.

i very liked the distortion sound, so I was curious if anybody knows sth about his rig...

thanks,

Philip

havent seen the dvd
but i would say he would have had the same setup as his clinic rig
which uses two roadkings linked in stereo with a boss dd-6 d
he also uses a chorus pedal

i would most definitely say that his distortion would have been from his amps
would you choose a stomp box?
or two 125 watt (possibly depending on power tube config) all tube amps?

you're probably right, I've heard that mesa's sometimes have that unwanted "pop" when switching between channels, so maybe he had to heads and a "stompbox" to switch between them...

thanks

he has two heads because he plays in stereo
and to get stereo delay

i recently read something about mesas popping upon channel changing
but it was linked to the amp not being warmed up properly for some people
one said he would warm up each channel for 3 mins
and be fine

in his big rig he has 3 roadkings
the 3rd one is back up
ready to go at anytime via his extensive midi action

@$#% me its a beautiful rig

How can you say "3 road kings" and not even blink???

His rig probably costs about the same as the national budget of Zimbabwe. ;)

he is so exceptional player... he must have "the master" rig, also he's Mesa's endorsee and keeps this company going (of course with others endorsed players)

and your point is? Race car drivers cars are expensive too

I'm just jokin' around... but I do think that after saying "three Mesa Road Kings".... one should appropriately pause....

... catch their breath...

.. and then continue. ;)

If I had the cash, I'd add a Lone Star combo to my Rectoverb combo with a tonebone A/B/Y switch. :)

I seriously doubt the tone you heard was coming from stompboxes. Over the years he's used a variety of Mesa amps/preamps for his tone including the Triaxis (which he uses a lot for clinics and other things where he needs a compact rig), the Mark IIC+, the Mark IV, the Road King, the LoneStar, as well as the ubiquitous Rectifiers. (Glass Prison was a Dual Recto Tremoverb for example) Train of Thought was all the Road King and LoneStar, and Octavarium was a mix of Road King/LoneStar and the Mark IV.

At a recent clinic, JP used two Road King half-stacks with Rectifier Traditional 4 x 12 cabinets with Celestion Vintage 30s and a stereo digital delay pedal (I guess the dd6 as above). He also had a Dunlop Crybaby 535Q. He said that for the last G3, he basically used that exact set-up.

He used the Road King's Vintage channel (channel 4?) for lead and the modern channel (channel 3?) for rhythm. That's all for distortion sounds. No stompboxes for distortion.

Yeah...my avatar was from the meet-and-greet after the clinic.

WOW! thanks for the info guys, yeah, I think you are right about that setup. My suggestions came from the dvd, where he had sth similar to this twin-pedal distorition pedals with tubes, it looked smiliar to my eyes, but probably it was sth else,
