Hey all,
I normally do more looking than posting but I had a topic I thought I'd throw at ya. I know that several years ago I saw the EBMM Petrucci 7 string that was used on the Scenes From A Memory DVD ,along with some of his other gear, sale on eBay. I also remember the guitar that was used on the Budokan DVD for the song Stream Of Consiousness being auctioned off as a fund raiser of sorts. There were several of his Ibanez guitars on the market at one time as well. I was just wondering if anyone here had a Petrucci owned guitar and would mind sharing their story about it.

Welcome Aboard!

I have two guitars owned by Mr. Petrucci.

I have the "Black Fire" prototype and a Sapphire Black with natural headstock he used for the beginning of the Train of Thought tour, auctioned on eBay by the Casey Lee Ball Foundation. Also, I'm pretty sure he also used it to record the album also. It is very distinct because of the natural headstock and you can see him playing one exactly like it the "making of" extras on the cd.

I don't remember an EBMM 7 string being auctioned. I do remember his Black and white Picasso Ibanez 7 being auctioned.

Your welcome.

The Black Fire prototype is especially cool, because of all the differences from the production Pet. I know you can't tell from my lousy pcture, but the arm contour is rounded and not as deep. The piezo preamp is in the control cavity, the bridge is bigger and actually toataly different, like it was hand machined. The small shield inlays have an innner black border, like the large inlay and the neck shape is totally different, flatter radius, a little wider an flattened in the back.

Are you a big Petrucci/Dream Theater fan?

What about EBMM's?

Do you own any?

If so, let's see some pics.

I'm a huge DT and Petrucci fan! I own two Petrucci models and one OLP. I just posted some pics in the "offcial pics of my guitars" thread.

I noticed the differences like the bridge, cut out and knobs in the black fire. I've saw some other pics of this guitar somewhere else before. That's where I saw the back of the control cavity and the difference of the input jacks. My favorite JP guitar is the black sparkle that he used in the Scenes From NY DVD and your black fire looks like the next step in line before the decided production model. Wasn't your guitar their first attempt at trying to come up with JP's signiture color before the Mystic Dream?

Yep, you're pretty knowledgable for a newbie;)

Methinks you know alot more than you're sharing so far.

Here's a quote from Dudley on the Black Fire finish from some correspondence with a previous owner.

This appears to be the "Black Fire" guitar
we made for John. It is one of the last
prototypes we made before the first hand
signed run. The color is Dupont Chromalusion
Black Fire, which is something his tech
thought would be cool. John liked the
Chromalusion concept, but not this
specific color, and we then introduced
the "Mystic Dream" color. It is also prior
to the special design Petrucci knobs.

Like I said, I've looked around and read more than I've posted :) I'm very picky when it comes to guitars and I always look for the differences. I noticed the major differences right off the bat between the JP original concept and the released production model. Not that they weren't improvments of couse. I've even looked underneath the bridge cover on my JP model to see how closely it resemebles the bridge like what is on your Black Fire guitar. Just one of my pet peeves I guess.

Take the new EVH Frankenstrat guitar for $30,000. I compared pics of the guitars that Eddie said he "couldn't tell from his original" along with pics of the original and found several differences in the finish alone in just a few minutes. Call it picky but for 30G's it better be identical ;)

I just found some pro pics from the original auction, here's the best of the bunch:

Edit:

I just realized that a pic of the piezo guts inside the control cavity might be proprietary info, so I deleted it. Sorry.

So you're the one that won that auction.....I remember that one well as I was the high bidder for a little while - but not when it counted!
:(
Congrats on those guitars! :D

Those "original" inlays look pretty cool, but the ones on the Sapphire Black, "current inlays", do look way nicer. That Black Fire is sick, but man is that trem and those knobs ugly! Still a very cool, uber-awesome guitar, though. Ernie, you are what I aspire to be, an owner of all JPs in, like, every colour. Well, maybe not every colour...

Dude, I think that I found your Black fire guitar on youtube. You may have these but just in case you don't I thought I'd post them.

JP was selling a neck and body of an Ibanez seven string on ebay at one point... I can't remember the name of the paint job but it was one of those funky psychadellic swirl paint jobs... it was just eh neck and body.... I was the high bidder on that but I got snipped! :(

You got that right but sometimes it better to ask forgiveness than permission! HA HA! Course if I had one of these guitars with me then I could probably sleep on your couch a while couldn't I ?

I knew that was you , I could tell by that avatar and the location :)

Let me know when you get the stuff dropped of at Morrells.
