I recently made the switch to 4 strings as I found I never really needed the lower notes and I actually like down tuning my E string to a low D. A lot of bassist don't care for that, but I love that note. However, after playing around on a couple of 4's I really missed having a 5 string. Not for the low B, but for the neck width and larger body. I played a 6 string at a bass shop yesterday and I've owned 6ers before. I really enjoyed being able to play chords when by myself writing as well as in a band context (especially with one guitarist!). I've toyed around with this idea a lot but I still haven't went for it yet.

Has anyone else done this with their Ray? I guess I'm curious too at how a single pickup bass would sound with a high C string.

Thanks for your input! :)

I think it would sound fine. I prefer a low b. Funny, but the low d is my favorite note, but I never liked playing in drop d. I think a high c would sound good. It'd be hard to make a MM bass sound bad.

A fretted low D just doesn't sound as good to me as the open low D. I also like the sound of an open A string though. Most bassist I talk to don't seem to like using any open strings.

I haven't strung my Bongo 5 with a high C but I have strung other 5's that way. It's always a challenge finding a high C string that sounds even with the others. I had never thought I'd have any use for a low B but I'm actually enjoying it.

It's hard to find a high C that matches? Interesting.

I may stick with a B string. As soon as I don't have it in a gigging situation I'll probably need it. I'm gonna go with a tapered B string though. To my ears, those are better.

I have a bongo 6 to cover anything I need to do with a bass. I have the restraint to play it like a 4 stringer if I want to. I just never want to. LOL

I don't mind open strings, I just like leaving the bass tuned to standard. Plus with the gauge of strings I use I don't like the way the e feels tuned to d.

I like the high C b/c I really want to learn to do more chording type playing. However, most high C strings just sound thin compared to the G string that's right next to it. Maybe if you try the EBMM 6 string set and use the C it might sound more even.

I've been considering purchasing another 5-banger just to tune it DADGC. I think it could open up some possibilities and I don't really play low Bs or even Cs as much anymore.

Yea man, I wanna tune EADGC with a drop tuner on the E. I think that would be killer!
