So our guitar player/singer decided last night that we need to tune a half step down so our songs are easier to sing. Well, readjusting my amp asside, I am not terrribly happy with the floppyness of my strings. I presently use Ernie Ball Regulars. Will putting on the Powers give me some much needed tension?

I have two packs of Regulars sitting there and I'd rather not spend the cash for the Powers (If I can find them) if it doesn't make much difference.

Welcome to mud city, don't forget the rubber boots!!

vocalists always want to have their way, don't they!
I don't know anything about powers, other than I noticed they are a few bucks cheaper than the supers. the end.

Cool, anyone else?

Too bad I'm not coming up from Super Slinkies or something, I'd see more of a difference.

Guess I'l go looking for the purple box after work today.

My band tunes down to C which I really do not like because it's stupidly low. (I need a 5 string, I know...) I definitely noticed a difference in going from regular slinky's to power slinkys on my Sterling. Just feel lucky that you're only tuned a half a step down.

How about giving the singer a swift kick in the junk...might boost his vocal range. ;)

I use Power Slinky 110 - 55 and we drop tune. I don't have any issues.

haha, well he does something I could never do, and he does it well so who am I to bitch. Plays guitar/sings + he's legally blind. If he wasn't as good as he is I'd dump the band in a heartbeat, but you gotta do what you gotta do if you love the music.

I suspect I'm going to need to do a setup?

I run Power Slinkys, regular pitch. Sounds great. I also like the added beef under the fingertips. I cannot comment on the detuning you do however. And yes, a setup will be needed, probably. It won't be a drastic change, just a hint of trussrod and a minor tweak of the intonation. Nothing that couldn't be done at home.

OK, so on that wave, intonation. If I play a harmonic on my twelfth fret and it shows the root and if I ply the twelfth and it's still the root I'm good right? otherwise I adjust the saddle to be closer or further from the bridge.

I don't have my bass with me and I'm going shopping after work, so what tools do I need just incase I don't have them at home.

Thanks for all your help guys!!

I play with drastically detuned tuning in my latest band and I use Hybrid Slinkies. The thicker low strings would help when detuning. I play with low action, though, so I still get a less than desirable sensation on the lowest string, tuned down to a C. (CGCF)., but with adjusted technique its okay. However power slinkies for a 4 string bass have even thicker gauges so they would be even better.

Setup wise, I think the truss rod will be fine. Since you are putting a heavier gauge on, yet tuning down a little, I think the tension will be more or less normal.

This is kinda my thinking for this situation. I guess I'll find out this afternoon.

Yep, in one of the bands I'm in I have to downtune to C, and I found the Supers I originally had on my SR4 were waaaay too floppy for that, so I switched to Power Slinkys and with a tweaked setup I've had no problems thanks to their increased string tension. Half a step downtuning shouldn't be a problem if you switch to Power Slinky strings.

Power slinkies are amazing for downtuning. Whenever I'm rocking out to a little atreyu I have to downtune to C and theres not any flop. I had to do a little bit of a setup when switching to them because of their higher tension, but they allow for lower action overall, which is a good thing. They also sound incredible but they will give your fingers a mean workout while you're getting used to them.

My advice is to try the Power Slinkys. I use them on my SR5 occasionally. It give some added guts to the G string and D string. And the low B string is just killer!

Hey all, thanks for the recomendations!! I was finally able to find some Power Slinkies at a local shop (They seem pretty difficult to find here) but the shops that didn't have them said they have had requests for them so they are going to get them in.

Anyway, they did the trick!! It actually seems I have more tension with the Powers tuned a half step down than with the regulars tuned standard! No more floppy floppy and I kinda like the way the strings feel, beefy!

Cool!
