Are the New Petrucci Pickups Made for the BFR???

I think I'm getting another JP (NOT the BFR) but I realized that the new pickups were likely designed for the BFR.

How do they sound in the Basswood standard JP?

I'm sure they were designed with all three guitars in mind. It doesn't make sense that DiMarzio would design a pickup just for use on one model and not test it out in JP's other guitars. Also, the CL/LF aren't too far off technically from the DS/Custom Neck, so I'm sure they knew that they would work well in the Basswood JP6's as well.

I'm sure they were designed with all three guitars in mind. It doesn't make sense that DiMarzio would design a pickup just for use on one model and not test it out in JP's other guitars. Also, the CL/LF aren't too far off technically from the DS/Custom Neck, so I'm sure they knew that they would work well in the Basswood JP6's as well.

It's just when you think about it... Petrush only plays his 9 BFR's now (with the exception of one stealth 7 and a double neck) so I assumed that the new pickups were designed with the BFR in mind. The BFR obviously has different woods and sounds so the pickup choice would be slightly different even considering he has not changed his musical tastes or the content of his material.

The new pickups sound great on the basswood body. I've A+B'd them with the original set circa 2001 and the D-sonic and, to my ears at least, they really deliver with a smoother and more powerful tone. I feel like they also go really well together, more
so than the other combos of pickups before. I never liked the D-sonic anyway.

I do agree that the new pups were likely designed on the BFR body with those specific wood choices, but I think this is true: BFR or not, a JP will always sound like a JP. So you're going to get very similar tones out of the basswood body and the BFR body.

Lastly -- isn't JP's stealth actually a BFR? So then the only non-BFR he still plays is the doubleneck, which isn't really used on anything more than just a couple of songs.

My point exactly. He doesn't (really) use his standard JP anymore so the new pickups were obviously designed for the BFR exclusively.

I am however, glad that you have A/B'ed them and are reporting that the standard JP (the only one that I would consider purchasing) sounds great with the new pickups.

It definitely sounds great, but I'll confess I've never played a BFR.

I never plan to!

$2,800 for a guitar is where Music Man looses me. I am so happy with the $1,300 Silo and the $1,600 JP I cant even put it into words.

Not to mention that I dont like finished necks.

While JP's stealth is a BFR, its not like the normal BFR's. JP's stealth has a basswood body, and painted maple neck. His is almost like the standard stealth models, but his MAY have a maple top. JP told me this at a gig one time, so this is coming straight from him.

With that info, the Liquifire and Crunchlab would sound great in the basswood JP's as well.

Secondly, I doubt any artist gives away all their tricks of the trade, so for all we know he could very well be using the older style JP's for some stuff. He did that exact thing on Systematic Chaos. Also, I bet we've only seen a small number of the one offs/protos that MM has built for John. Keep that in mind.
