I am probably gonna work a swap deal on an 04 Stingray thats in great shape that I just found on craigslist. I am looking at swaping a 1977 Ric 4001, that has been used bruised, and abused. I picked up the ric about a year ago for about a $1,000.00 dollars, and had it refretted since then. As much as I have tried to play the bass it just doesn't feel right in my hands being that I have been playing stingray's for about ten years now and the sound is just not there. I am definetly gonna swap but how fair of a trade am I making dollar wise, I guess is my question.

Well...depends on you. Do you think it is worth the trade. The Stingray is in great shape and you love the feel and tone. You are not happy with the Ric. Sometimes....best to go with what makes you happy. My 2 pennies.

Post pics once you get the deal done...I know you are going to get it...;)

I paid $465 for my 05 stingray and I might trade it for a ric if the ric had the binding with checkering in it. Then I would sell the ric and buy a Big Al. How bad does the fellow want the ric? I would make him throw in some cash on the deal. Act like you don't want to trade and if he really wants to, I bet he will throw in some cash. Good luck!

Rics sell for $1200 to $1800 or so on eBay, and used Stingrays sell for about 800 bucks. I think you're better off selling the Ric and then buying a used Stingray.

For a '77 comsetically beat up Ric, all original (except for a fret-job), you can get a lot more than a grand.

Stingray + 5-600 hundred is what you should be getting.

Very huge difference in the feel of a stingray vs. a ric.

If you haven't had time on a stingray, you should before swapping.

My two cents.......... "Swap it"!!! If you're not happy with the Ric, then it's best to get what you know you'll be happy with. The first time I ever traded a bass was a USA Active Deluxe Fretless five string Jazz bass, and I traded it for my first Stingray. Straight up swap, that turned out to be the best trade I ever made. Up until that point I only played Warwick basses. I fell in love with the Stingray, and shortly after sold all my Warwicks and have been devoted to MUSICMAN basses every since.

I traded a US 75 reissue Jazz bass for my Sterling... definitely do the deal, you won't be disappointed with 10 yrs of SR play thats for sure. I had my sub5, got the jazz... then got the Sterling... I have not looked back... only looking forward to a ray with sterling neck :) or maybe a bongo BP style :)

Hi jerimy77.
You have the amazing honour to recieve my very first post in this forum. I have to start somewhere...
Here we go:

Thats exactly what I did some years ago.
I traded my 1978 Ric for a 83 Stingray.

The Ric is a fine bass but a complete different animal.
Great edgy sound especially played with a pick, but doe the complete lack of shapings and the typical neckdive the handling is rather.... well... lets say special. ;)
Because of that I had a real love-hate relationship with it. It changed every day. All in all i didn't look back ever since.

Well... not really... sometimes, but very rarely I go weeping about the Ric. But only at night when nobody sees me....

Seriously: For me they joy about the Stingray overweights the loss of the Ric by far.

Greets

According to what I see in TB sales threads and on eBay, your Ric (especially if with the checkered binging) must be worth a lot more than the 'Ray... dollar wise. You should be able to get as much money for the Ric to actually buy two used or a new custom ordered (e.g. the DD2) 'Ray.

Since every instrument is a bit different (woods, aging, use) I'd only do the even trade if the StingRay you'll be getting is 100% up your alley, feel & soundwise. Otherwise, go the sell & buy other route. IMO.
