The self proclaimed "Uk Number One Bass Guitar Magazine", Issue 41 March/April 2009 published a full 3 pages review on the StingRay 4 BFR

I have scanned it and uploaded on my webbo for y'all to read. It's a very good review and the only 2 points they comment against is the lack of a top body contour where the arm rests, and the price. For the rest of the review they give it top marks

Here is the review: StingRay 4 BFR

In the same issue they also have a small mention of the Ernie Ball company from their NAMM review of many brands. shown below:

Thanks captain for posting that...nice review. But I do not understand where the 4 for build quality comes from...

I want one for the Big Al now.

just the thought of the 1000 year old redwood makes me reluctant to play mine more than absolutely necessary!

i do love the reference to the blackbottomed, creambinding guitars without an arm contour! ;)

A real man does not use the contour...they lift the arm up in a right angle and anchor the thumb on the pickup.

Although, I do not do that.

Maybe I'm not understanding this. Why won't my bass make coffee for me?

And the lack of a toothpick dispenser is simply unacceptable. Oh and where is the toaster? No bass should come without a toaster.

I want to know what well established luthier can make me a custom bass as well appointed as the RW BFR for the same price.

Just forget that you're in the U.S. and understand that EBMM's cost about double the price in Europe and UK. Then you can try again.

That said: I wouldn't want anyone else build me a RW BFR!

But you said you liked the articles.

Back on subject, it seems to me that the bass magazines, the few that are somehow still alive, feel that they just can't simply give a bass, any bass, an overall excellent review. There has to be some niggling little detail, real or imagined....or else they end up like ye olde Bass Player magazine.

Print is dead. (Ask Ed Friendland.)

Actually there is a lot of truth in what you say Jack.

Sadly no one really reads many mags these days anymore, it's a dying trade.

To be honest this particular magazine came out of nowhere, the only other bass player mag called Bassist disappeared.

Three issues after their launch they start calling themselves "The Number One UK Magazine" same as I could probably call myself "The number One Italian Bass Player living in London" but I am sure theres gotta be more of my bros plucking 4's & 5ers somewhere here in this town.

Jack... totally out of topic, isn't it time you changed your Xmas avatar for something more unxmassy?

To be fair to Stuart Clayton and his crew who do a lot for BGM they are pretty good, it was a petty niggle about the Ray BFR I to must agree with that, but the mag overall is a good one.

Even @ $2500.00 no US luthier of siginificance can build a bass with a fancy top, binding, tone block, and gorgeous finish. There may be a couple of unknown builders who can do it, but then I'm not dropping that much coin on a bass that will essentially have a very low resale value.

The only thing comparable I was able to find quickly was a LUKE BFR, which goes for 3'650 EUR (about 4'750 USD). And I think that's a price point where you can start looking for custom built instruments.

The question is rather: Will you get the design, playability and sound you're looking for?
