Here is a question from a friend of mine 'The Stoner' who is interested in buying an Axis with a floyd.

'Can you put a Q on the EB forum about using an Axis with a Floyd? As it is set to stop you pulling up on it I've seen some comments that say it is very limited (basic dives and that's it) and that when you bring it back up you get an audible "clunk" as the floyd comes back in contact with the body. Maybe the other forum people could give their views on the usablility and any problems with it.'

Can anyone help?

It depends upon the way you use the trem. If your style consitutes alot of "tapping" or "brushing" on the trem bar then yeah, I would say that you'll still get somewhat of a clunk when it returns to zero. More or less clunk depending on the spring tension but if your this kind of style then I would assume that the tension will be just enough to get it back to the zero position.

If your a "grab the bar and mean it" kind of player then usually you'll have at least partial control of the bar on its way back to zero so there is really no clunk at that point.

In a nutshell, if you let go of the bar while it's still depressed you'll probably have issues. If you keep your hand on it then you won't.

I used to like to have to muscle the trem down but since I now have a JP, I have changed my ways.

Yeahh, I found the same way.

Clunk when returning.

I'm always been used to Ibanez Jem tremolo that's is all floating.

But since you start to playing it more often , you can be used to it.

Yeah if you depress it, then just let it go it returns to resting on the body and make a clunk noise. Once you use it for more than five minutes you get the feel for it. It is really a non-issue. You cannot do certain things obviously, like pulling up (unless you float it), nor can you do the 'flutter' trick (or whatever its called). Otherwise... it's great.

axis floyd question

I wouldn't worry about it. I switch from floating trems to one one set up with my mod for dive bomb only. I know which one I'm dealing with instinctively because for the divebomb setup to work right (not dropping flat when bending) the spring tension is increased. It has more of a stiffer feel. And yes it will clunk! But I always use it for the same songs, so it becomes part of your techique as much as everything else involved in knowing how to play a song.

If I do forget, the first clunk would remind me to gently take it back to "zero" anyway.
