Has anyone here ever had to shim the neck of their Axis to get the action lowered to their preference?

I believe the relief on my neck is good and the bridge is sitting parallel when looking at it from front and side. It just seems like the bridge is sitting too high for the strings to be at the correct height up the neck.
I am going to have my tech check it out, but I was curious if anyone has had to do this on their Axis.

i had to have mine done. when i decided to float the trem and keep the same action as it had beforehand. after a week or so i missed the amount of sustan i got with it flat on the body and had it switched back.

I have one that is shimmed and one that isn't (or shimmed less then the other, who knows) but with not being able to raise or lower the saddles on the Axis's Floyd you have to if you want to lower the action. It doesn't have any effect on playability or tone... its not a big thing. Think of it this way, if it was good enough for "he who's name must not be spoken" then adding a shim should be fine.

I am not opposed to doing it. My biggest question would is does it compromise the stability of the neck at all?
I had a PRS SAS once that had a neck joint that was just too flimsy. If I moved around the stage and picked up the guitar, etc it would constantly change pitch....like the frickin neck was a whammy bar. I could not perform live with that guitar and I don't want that to happen to the Axis.

sort answer to your question then, no. Its fine. I have one with and one with out... there are no issues as long as you don't go crazy and add like 100 shims.

Sweet...thanks for the input. I have a few other minor issues I am trying to sort out to get this guitar to where I am more comfortable playing it at gigs. I think I'll start new threads focusing on those individually.

Have you contacted customer service? Threads about "issues" with guitars have a way of going south real quick... usually CS is the better solution rather then starting a thread about that kind of stuff... shim question, totally different.

Yeah I know...maybe issue isn't the right word. And I am not sure CS is the way to go for an 11 year old guitar I have no warranty for....maybe I am wrong.
I am sure they may have some valuable insight to the questions I have, but I like to learn from other users wherever I can.

Shoot them an email, my main Axis is from 1996. They were more then happy to help me out with a concern I had last summer...

I've worked on a few different ones, an Axis, Silhouette and a Bongo Bass and they all had identical shims with little oblong holes punched out of the sides, leading me to believe they came that way from the factory. Nothing wrong with that. They were very thin plastic.

yes!! If you want perfection.

I custom brass shim all my guitars in the neck and each individual string saddle!

1. My trem plate "always" remains level (I never use it to adjust string height).
2. The neck is always perfectly straight top to bottom (never a buzz).
3. String action is precise on each individual string.

Thank you A.J. I have sent an email out to you.

I certainly never meant to imply that CS would not help me for any of the wrong reasons. I made an assumption you probably 'shouldn't' based on the fact I have no warranty. Bad assumption on my part and I apologize.
The fact you come on the board and have even offered to listen and provide input if you can speaks volumes for the Customer Service and that is extremely appreciated!
