Hello,

Can any of you tell me if your Axis guitars need neck shims? I just acquired a nice Axis and saw that the bridge was raised quite a bit and the neck was angled. I took out the shims and lowered the bridge and now the action is high. I don't mind shimming the neck pocket but would love some advise. Thanks guys.

Yep, it's been discussed a few times here over the years (try the forum search engine, or google with site:ernieball.com). Shims are not a problem, no effect on tone. They are regarded as a normal part of the setup process if required.

I actually got some factory shims sent to me from EBMM! i sent them an email...great customer service. I find the action on my axis a bit high and haven't gotten around to putting the shims in yet.

My EVH came with 2 factory shims installed. I've come to realize for the Axis/EVH, setup revolves around getting the Floyd parallel to the body so it rests straight, and getting the neck as straight as possible. Once you do that by raising or lowering the Floyd posts and adjusting the truss rod, THEN you can decide how your string action is. Too high? Shims are needed. Too low? Remove one shim. Etc.

I just have a curiousity question: So if the neck isn't shimmed the tremolo won't go low enough to get low action? How thick are these shims? How low of action are we talking(12th fret high and low e)?

BTW glad you got yours fixed Andy.

The shims are pretty thin. Think medium Fender pick thin. And shins aren't always needed. Just if the action can't be adjusted properly.
My action is 1/16 at the 12 th fret, a hair higher on the bass strings.

If you want super low action, I think almost all guitars would benefit from a shim. That being said, of all the guitars that I've had, the only ones I could get super low action without shims were my EBMM JPs.

I have had no reason to pull the neck on any of my EBMM guitars and the action is set pretty low and exactly how I like it.I have put shims in other guitars and find it no big deal whatsoever though I once saw a thread on another guitar companies CS model which starts with an F coming with a shim and the owner of a new guitar b!tching as if they put a fake neck on it lol. To make it even stranger it turned out he just collected and did not even play?

I think the bottom line is do what you have to to get the guitar to play the way you want it to!

I always thought if you adjust the pivot screws just adjust the tremolo springs to compensate. Lower bridge tighten springs. So I guess you can't do this with the axis, because it sits on the top? If you lower the bridge too much the guitar digs into the top?
