when did the axis neck change, I pulled out my old axis from 96 today and the neck is totally different from my 2003 axis supersport, when did the neck shape change, maybe jon can chime in?
well for one the newer axis neck is thicker, the older axis has more of the original VH shape where it gets thinner as you go up the frets, maybe a tad wider at the base toward the neck pup, its really a big difference, was there any kind of change, or did my axis ss come with fat neck, they are totally different, and the older axis has the best neck ever on ay guitar, if I could put that neck on my silo that would be my signature model -
wow jon your quick! its a very noticable difference, the older axis has a much thinner neck and the contour is different, its more like the old EVH's, whereas the newer axis neck is fatter and its a more rounded profile, a fatter neck, I wish the newer axis had the older neck on it, my older axis feels so nice, I have to go check out a new one now and see what neck is more like -
I have a '97 Axis Sport and a '99 Axis Sport. The necks feel quite different from each other, but I think the measurments would be very similar as it's hard to work out exactly where the difference is. Because of this, I've always thought it's probobly a production variaton rather than an intentional change.
I have heard something about the early Axis guitars having the VH shape though.
My understanding is that the necks are cut using CNC technology. As a result, I would expect the neck specifications and tolerances to be startlingly tight and consistent. However, since the neck IS made of wood, could the perceived variations be due to settling or shifting?
The only REAL way of quantifying any perceived differences would be to get out the old vernier calipers and the straight edge and "get busy".
Jon will correct me if I'm mistaken.
Good Luck and let us know.
PS (the old EVH Axis DO differ slightly in neck specs from the current SS)
I have two similar guitars from another manufacturer. Both necks are supposed to have identical specs. One feels thinner than the other one. Yet measuring them with as much precision as I can, they measure identically.
I don't know what EBMM's process is, but assuming the necks are hand sanded you can't discount the human element. Two different people may sand the necks differently depending on time of day, day of the week, wordload, etc.
These small and understandable differences aren't as measurable by instruments as they are by somebody's feel.
Just my theory. Somebody who knows more should shoot this idea down if they want.
