anyone try this combo out? I love my Y2D, but I miss the way my old Axis sounds.

If I could get my Y2D to sound like the Axis, it would be just about the perfect guitar!!!!

Anyone?

I did it for a while. Pretty cool. Sounds great, but not exactly like an Axis- the TOM bridge & poplar body impart a certain sound.

Give it a try. You may be surprised with the results. I dont have the axis pickups in mine, but I would say that the bridge is something similar tonally...it's a high output pickup which is really fat and smooth but crunchy at the same time. I have the Suhr DSH+ in the bridge and DSV in the neck. They sound really amazing! they also split very nicely...at least to my ears it does the job to get those single coil tones when I need.

But yea, like beej mentioned, the bridge and body will probably not sound exactly like an Axis.

You can't buy the Axis pickups other than in a guitar, though you can find them second hand. They're either black, zebra or with a chrome cover.

The closest thing from DiMarzio would be the Tone Zone and Air Norton. The problem is that their regular purple color is lighter than the one on the custom SM pickups. Maybe if you call them and special order directly from them?

Oh wow. That's what I was afraid of. What color are your pickups?

Mine are just plain black. I dont mind the look at all. Suhr dont make different color pickups except for white and cream. It kind of gives it more of an LP look...but not really with the purple sunset haha. The stock SM single coil is still there and does not really look that weird since it is a really dark purple color anyway.

Food for thought...DiMarzio recently revised their FAQ and now says that the closest thing is the Air Norton (neck) and AT-1 (bridge). Not sure how long ago that was...

You know what, I spent some time with the Y2D and I really dig it the way it is

I guess I'll just have to buy another axis!!!
