One thing that has always bugged me on the wiring of my Axis Sport is why positions 2 & 4 are pretty much the same.

I get Pos 1 as bridge HB, 3 as both HB and 5 as neck HB but Pos 2 & 4 are either both inner coils or both outer coils and there doesn't seem to be that much difference between them to me.

Would make more sense to me to have just the tapped single coil in each position (bridge & neck) to get the more Strat type sounds in addition to the LP sounds for bridge & neck so you would have

1 - Bridge single coil
2 - Bridge HB
3 - Bridge HB & Neck HB
4 - Neck HB
5 - Neck single coil

Anyone shed any light on the thinking behind this??

Just guessing, but the thinking might be that the stock wiring gives you noise-free combinations of coils. (Whereas split coils are noisy.)

Personally, I find there's a reasonable difference between positions 2 and 4. But if you don't like them, it's quite easy to rewire the switch to give you just about anything you want.

Yeah fair point on the noise-free element. Didn't think of that one.

It's not a guitar I play a lot t.b.h. and I like to keep things stock on my higher end guitars.
