I bought a hard tail (no tremolo) Axis with P90s this weekend and really enjoy this guitar. I have a few questions:

1. The dealer didn't have the case, and said he'd order one. He called me today and said that Music Man no longer offers a hardshell Tolex style case, only a molded one. This is kind of frustrating, as every molded case I've ever own fell apart and was unrepairable. The plastic tends to warp, and these cases just don't hold up over time, like a hardshell case. Also, most molded cases I see have less interior room for storage of items, and some don't even have a door for the storage compartment. Is there a reason why Music Man no longer offers a good Tolex style hardshell case? For a guitar of this quality to come with a molded case isn't right.

2. The guitar didn't come with any paperwork, or accessories. Is there anything that I should have recieved with the guitar?

3. Is there any special treatment or care required for the "gun oil / wax" finish on the neck? I love the way the neck feels, and want to make sure its properly maintained. The guitar I bought was a floor demo, and there was a fair amount of finger dirt that cleaned up easily, but I wonder what should be used on this neck.

4. Who makes the P90s on this guitar? I haven't tried the guitar in a club that is prone to hums and buzzes, but I'm anxious to hear how the P90s work.

thanks in advance,
Dave Patterson / Mudbug

I got a molded case with my Petrucci model - it seems okay - but you are right - it doesn't have any doors on the compartments. I thought I read that Duncan made the P90's - but I may be wrong. Does it have the "silent circuit" to reduce the hum? With my new Petrucci I got - 2 spare trem springs - a small Ernie Ball pamphlet - a truss rod tool - 2 allan wrenches.

Hi Jim.

I really don't like molded cases and would buy a hardshell case for this guitar, but I'm afraid I'll have a hard time finding one that fits the body contors shape. Molded plastic cases warp, the hardware rips out, the plastic cracks in cold weather and the lack of interior storage is a drag. I just don't think its right to not at least offer a hardshell case as an option.

Don't know who makes the P90s, but it does have a battery compartment on the back of the guitar, so I assume that's the "silent circuitry" feature. I'd like to know more about it. I haven't tried the guitar in a noisey invironment yet, but hope its better than some of my other guitars.

Hey David,

Sorry about the case man, we don't do the Tolex style one anymore. Couldn't really tell you why. As far as paperwork and accessories, that's really up to the store you bought your guitar from. There is very minimal paperwork, it's just a little info on the EB company and warranty stuff. The pickups on your guitar are called MM90s, very similar to the P90s and are made in house here in San Luis Obispo CA.

Almost Forgot....

To maintain the neck, use gun stock oil, with an infrequent use of gun stock wax. High grade lemon oil is a good cleaner. Check out the FAQ section on ernieball.com for more info. Thanks.

Make sure you register your guitar on the Ernie Ball site - apparently the will send you 3 sets of strings for doing it. But be aware - you need to know the "names" for the EB strings - they don't give you guages. I wanted 9-42's and chose medium lite - but I think I should have chosen Super Slinky's ?

Jim,

Thanks for the tip about the strings. When I bought the guitar at Guitar Center, they were doing a promotion with Ernine Ball. Buy an Ernie Ball guitar and get 24 sets of strings....! I'm set for a month, or two.

I'm anxious to try this guitar out with one of my bands. It plays incredibly well, and I've missed having a guitar with P90s.

Any advice on how to care for the neck? I like the "unfinished" feel of the neck, and don't want to mess it up. What does EB recommend for cleaning and maintaining the "gun oil / wax" finish?

regards,

dave patterson

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. The dealer ordered a new case for it, and I hope it'll hold up. I've just had bad luck with molded cases in the past, and think a premium instrument deserves better. I'm not rough with my instruments, and that's why I find the molded case to be disappointing. I've contacted G&G Cases to see if they can make me one for the guitar, as they are listed as a case supplier for Ernie Ball.

What do you recommend for cleaning and maintaining the neck on these guitars?

regards,

Cleaning and Maintaining

Gun Stock oil is good for maintenance, with gun stock wax infrequently. Try lemon oil to clean it. There is a more detailed explanation on the FAQ section on ernieball.com. Thanks.

i bought my blue quilt axis used and the neck was a little discolored from playing. i contacted EB in regards to cleaning and maintaining the neck and they said use high grade lemon oil for cleaning. and use gunstock wax maybe 1-2 times a year to maintain the neck. also they said if it gets really dirty use a fine grade steel wool. i did that and the neck looks close to new again and feels great. also i imagine just washing your hands before you play it would help keep the neck alot cleaner. and i'm sure non-smoking is always a plus too.

as for the case thing, i have one of the older tolex hardcases, and one molded case. i like them both but prefer the molded one myself. i beleive the older tolex hardcases were made for EB by G&L??? maybe EB can verify that. if you really want a tolex hardcase maybe try looking at high quality aftermarket cases and find something that fits it nice.
