I currently own a Tobacco Burst AXIS and just got word my new AXIS super sport in "Black is on its way!

I'm looking forward to the TONE options this Guitar has VS the Axis standard!

I love the AXIS but on a clean setting it sometimes has more power than need!

Does anyone own both of these to comment of the difference in tone?

Hi John,

I have owned an Axis Sunburst from 96 but sold it. The floyd was my problem on this one. I have installed in split in it for more versatility

I own now an ASS that I find much more versatile. The pickup position 2 and 4 are really excellent. Far better than the splitted position on the Axis cause you can choose inner coil or outer coil

IMHO, I think the ASS is better at least suits me well :p

I have both. I found the additional wiring and the tone knob of the ASS meant the guitar lost some 'welly'. Whilst the tone is in the same ballpark, the ASS just seemed to lack something compared to the Axis. In the end, I replaced the 5 way with a 3 way and took out the tone control. That said, the sound may work for you, especially with the coil tap options.

Hi John,

I'd have to say that I'm with Tim on this one.
I was briefly in the fortunate position of having a hardtail ASS in my collection as well as my No1 Purple Axis.
Whilst the versatility afforded by the 5 way switching and additional tone knob couldn't be ignored I did find myself preferring the what I percieved as the extra 'shove' that the Axis seemed to posess.
But I would qualify the above by saying that I'm not an especially subtle guitarist and so the tonal nuances of the ASS over the Axis may well be lost on me.
Truth be told I do wish my Axis was a hardtail though....

I play in Vulture Squadron.

I wouldn't know a tonal nuance if it bit me on the arse!:D

How about comparing the vintage tremolo to the Floyd Rose? I think the Petrucci tremolo is the best tremolo I've ever played or owned. If I were to get an Axis down the road. I'm not sure which one I'd get.

Me neither, which is why the original Axis is THE guitar for me.

1volume pot, 2 pickups, 3 way switch, enough said !

The only reason that my Albert Lee's still got a tone knob on it is because It'd look ugly with the hole in the plate.;)

Ha ha! It's true. Although the JPs are equipped with a tone knob, I don't think I've ever tried turning one. I'll have to give it a go one day...just to see what happens!

My upper frequency hearing is so bad anyway that to remove any more of it would just be daft!:D

You guys have got me thinking about ditching the tone knob now.
Although since I got my ASS last week I have yet to use the tone knob.

Ditching the tone control adds load to the p'ups (500k rather than 250k) and brightens them up. Some people love the effect.

I don't use the tone control so much, but there are a few cool things you can do with it including wiring it up to split the humbucker. As you roll off the tone you slowly ground the second coil of the 'bucker. Works like a charm on the Morse where the 'bucker sounds great split.

I've done A/b comparisons on the same guitar with and without tone pot in the circuit. The loading does make a clear audible difference. The sound is brighter w/o the tone pot.

That's good to know!
Someday I'd like to own an Axis. I don't want a Floyd, but would want the pups to be as hot as possible!

Foggy, they're hot p'ups as is! It's just that you can change the EQ of the guitar by messing with the resistance. You can do the same by messing with your amp as well :)

I own an EVH and an Axis Sport. The Axis Sport is made of ash, so it's not exactly apples to apples tone-wise (Super Sport & Axos bodies are identical), but the sound is similar.

I never really use my tone control, it's always just a bit below 10, but what I love the most about the Axis Sport is the 5-way switching. The split humbuckers sound amazing on these guitars, especially for clean tones. I believe the pups are the same in all Axis models, but being able to split them gives you many more options tone-wise. Oh yeah, the combination of the MM vintage trem & locking tuners works incredibly well. For years, I only played Floyd-equipped guitars, but I am in love w/ the MM vintage trem. String changes & intonation adjustments are so much easier & it stays in tune really well.
