Why does the Axis have more balls than the super sport if they are supposed to have the same pick ups, I know MM claims that they are the same guitar with different trems but there is something else to it, the ernie ball dealer here told me that the pups on the axis are hotter, not sure if thats true but it sure seems that way to my ears - lock

I've got an Axis, an Axis Super Sport, and an Axis Sport, and all are humbucker equipped... There are subtle but noticable differences in tone between all three, but I don't know that the Axis pups are actually hotter - I think the Tone pot and the different switch on the Sport and Super Sport might slightly load the pickups and help explain it...

I believe the Axis and Super Sport pickups are all the same. I just had to order a replacement bridge pickup for my Axis, and the shrink wrap had a sticker with a bar code on it, and underneath it said 'EVH/Axis/Super Sport'. So I would imgaine they are the same pickups on all these guitars!
Don't overlook the impact of mass differences between the Floyd tremelo on the Axis, and the vintage tremelo on the Super Sport.
The tremelo block on the Floyd is massive, and I get as much sustain on the Axis as my Ibanez Artist (set neck, mahogony body).
I have not seen the tremelo block on the Super Sport, but even if it is the same as the Floyd, the extra mass in the saddles and whale tail could make a substantial difference.
