Make sure you insert the battery with the terminals in the correct position.
I wish all basses that had active electronics would have a bypass for a passive mode as well.
Is your bass still under warranty ? You might have to get the pre amp and pickup checked if it's definitely not the battery. Could be a loose wire, or bad output jack.
Have you tried other guitar cables ? The problem might not be your bass

yeh ive changed leads, i manged to get the bass into "emergency surgery" if u will heh.

The guy who looked at it said something about the battery compartment and the input socket, he wants to replace them with fender made parts which he believes are better?

Its had a temporary fix for the gig today then its going back for a re-fit.

well, i really think that it's the chord or the battery compartment. i had a similar problem, and it was the chord. but the thing about the chord, is that it's only certain positions the chord is in where it doesn't work. i'm going to purchase monster cables, and since it's a life warrenty, if i ever thing it's the chord...i'l get it replaced....for free!

I had the same problem when I first changed my battery. I was trying to use a Duracell Pro Cell and could not get my bass to work. I noticed that it was harder to close my battery door. I tried another brand battery and it worked fine, the battery door even closed better. I found out sometimes the contacts of the battery does not seat all the way in the battery compartment, it will ride up in the compartment rather that go all of the way in. Inside of the compartment there is not full cut outs but just a round and a square hole and sometimes the battery does not go all of the way into the holes.

A Duracell Pro Cell was what I was trying to use but it seemed that it wouldn't hit the contacts at the bottom of the battery compartment. I tried a different kind of battery and it was fine. I don't think that it had nothing to do with length but when it wouldn't go all the way in where the contacts are it seemed longer because it wouldn't seat, it looked like the contacts were holding it back, the battery was no longer than the one that I used.

My SR5 has had the same Panasonic 9v akaline in it since the 1st part of Jan.03 and now it's damn'er Sept.03 and this battery fits perfect.Since they only cost about a $1.50 at the Dollar General I pickup a few packs since my MTD eats batteries like crazy. If you get a chance to try them,by all means do so.

The bass tech who is re-fitting my MM at the moment said they really have to be alkaline, normal 9v's just dont cut it...

so he said.. i thought they were all alkaline heh

Hi folks, this is my first post and I'm glad to be reading this thread. I went to do a session with my new SR5 and thought it'd be great to drop a new battery into it at the session and lo and behold no sound!! So I swapped out the new ProCell for a Rayovac (sp?) and it fit alot better. Good to see that the battery thang ain't just on my bass. Slight inconvenience but hey, it's an SR5 that I'm playing, I'm not about to complain! ;-)

cheers
