I'm bored sat here at work so....

Name what you think is the best bass line ever...

I'd say mine is Pearl Jam's Jeremy because if i had never heard that song i would never have liked Pearl Jam and never would have picked up the bass...

tough one, so many great lines!!!
.... "I was made to love her" James Jamerson on a Stevie Wonder tune is amazing and one of the greatest lines but then there's also "Ramble On" John Paul Jones great counterpoint type of line, and we can't forget "Don't Give Up" Tony Levin!!! "Peg"/"Josie"/"Kid Charlemagne"/etc.etc. / Chuck Rainy ................ Paul Chambers' collective work.......

sorry to be of no definitive decision :D

ps. "Black" off of Ten was the reason I got a fretless and eventually discovered Jaco, so thank you Jeff Ament!

The 8 count solo in La Villa Strangiato or any of the solos from YYZ. I love the bass from Tony Levin's Don't Give Up but I find the bass line on Big Time right after the Hey Hey Hey Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey makes me think that Tony is the most in tune and on time bass player in the world. I have paid tribute to (copied) this line in one of the songs I created.

Strictly speaking Tony doesn't take sole credit for that part of the bass line. Whilst the notes were fingered by Tony on the fretboard, the main drummer on the album Manu Katche (I think it was him) was playing the line by hitting the strings with a pair of drum sticks. To emulate this live, Tony couldn't get the hang of using a single drumstick , so Peter Gabriel suggested cutting up a pair of sticks and taping them to his fingers. That is how the TL Funk Fingers were born.

My own personal fave is Sledgehammer and for some reason Rio by John Taylor for Duran Duran back in the early 80's.

Seasons greeetings to everyone.
