Bass or amp?

Well, I'm in doubt what my next purchase will be. I've been GASing for a 5 stringer (I play in a metal band, and some other styles where a 5er could come in handy), a musicman of course, since I love my MM 4 string that much, and I know it gives me the ultimate playing comfort and tone.
Next moth, I'll have enough money to buy a new bass, but my amp should be replaced too.
It's an old Fender M-80 combo, it sounds good, but I don't feel like it can handle all the power of the musicman if you know what I mean. I was thinking about buying a G&L Tribute L2500 (which sounds great too) and a good amp (probably Ampeg or EBS).
But the point is that if I buy a G&L, I know that sooner or later I'm going to buy an MM SR5 anyway.
So, what do you guys think? what's best to buy first: bass or amp?
btw: I've also been thinking about a Lakland Skyline 55-02, which looks great, but the cost price doesnt differ a lot from a MM (about 500 euro's).
I've been looking for a used SR5, but I've been looking for a few months, without result. And a used SR5 is almost the same price as a new lakland skyline.

In your case, already having a MM4 I'd say go with the amp. Having a good amp will make your MM sound even better. Have you thought about drop-d on your 4 string. I play quite a few tuned in drop d tuning, it gives you the low d of a 5 and the comfort of a 4. I'd recommend trying it.

I would get the SR 5 first as that would solve half of your bass future. Then the amp would be my next goal. SR 5 sure is a great bass.

that's not an option I love my SR4, it's a keeper. If I get a new amp, it 'll be a 4*10" cab with the EBS HD350 or Ampeg pre-amp with power amp, a decent rig

I say go with the amp. You already have a great bass that you just want to upgrade. You have an amp that you need to upgrade. I'll vote for the Hipshot D-tuner too if you really need the low D. I have one on my P bass and I like it. I did have a G&L Tribute L-2500 for a few days and I sent it back. I found the string spacing to be too tight and it had a scratchy treble pot right out of the box.

I also had a Lakland Skyline 55-01 that I kept about 3 weeks. I know it isn't the same as a 55-02, but once I compared it directly against my SR4, I sent it back too.
