Strings - What sort of music do you play? Jack and I are going to tell you flatwound, but we're both geezers, so we're probably biased. Flats give a nice fat sound, with the added bonus that they are easy on your frets, fingerboard and fingers. However, if you are a Flea impersonator, you'll most likely be better using roundwound strings. If you want to get into specific brands of strings feel free to ask.

As for cases, buy the best case you can afford. A moulded Gator or SKB style case is an excellent all round choice.

EB_SFN one of the best strings you can put on your Stingray, IMHO are Ernie Ball's own Slinkys. The Super Slinkys in the pink package are my favorites. They just have a good feel to them, and have a very nice snap. These strings are light gauge, (45 - 100) but you can try heavier ones if you like a slightly thicker sound. You can find these at this site, under products.

I had these on my Stingray for about a year, and then I put on a set of Dean Markley Blue Steels. These strings have a darker sound (highs not as bright) than the Slinkys. They have a very balanced sound, and will give your Stingray a slightly different sound, although the signature Stingray tone will always be there.

The Dean Markley site: http://www.deanmarkley.com/htmlDocs/BassBlStPckg.html

BTW, these are both roundwond strings. Neither brand sounds better, just different. If you really want me to tell you which one to try first, I'd say the Slinkys. They're very good strings, and will give you a starting point from which you can build your own frame of reference on different string tones.

Good luck in your string search.

Strings

Here's another vote for Ernie Ball Slinky's. I mainly use D'Addario Prisms, but put some EB's on my Stingray and they sound amazing. As has been said, strings are a personal choice and the only way to know what sounds/feels good to you, is to put them on and try them. Only problem is that that can get expensive. Good luck, but you can't go wrong with Slinkys.

Derek, can I have some free strings now? :)

I'm a sucker for GHS Boomers....light gauge. I'll probably get some flak from that but I love the way they play and sound. Plus, they're cheap.

Hey man I play D'Addarios basically, but trust me I WILL put a set of GHS Boomers on any of my basses if the cash flow is a little slow.

Hey....All I play is Elixirs...I used to be into Blue Steel and Boomers and I tried Elixirs one day and was hooked. I play light to medium gauge, I guess that is all preference....And I heard that Elixirs are a little bit thicker than other brands. Like, Elixir Lights would be thicker than GHS Lights, so keep that in mind if you wanna try them.
