Hi guys, I recently acquired a Sabre which I love! The neck is amazing. However, The owner had 10's on it which I did not like. I switched em to 9-46s, fine, but the next day somehow behind the nut started ringing, i thought it must have been because i moved down in gauge, I just ordered 10's put em on and now the g string is ringing only. I thought there may have been something in the nut so I took a guitar pick and didn't file with it, just tried to move stuff out, and now its also buzzing AND ringing. Help me please. I think I may of screwed up big time and should of brought it to a tech.

I've had this happen numerous times on many kinds of guitars. The G-string and D-strings are the most common for this because of their shallow angle downwards to their tuning posts. If the string slot in the nut is cut with too little of a backward angle, it will allow vibrations to transfer behind the nut, causing the ringing. It should be easy job for a good tech to massage the angle of the slot with the correct size nut slotting file. BUT if the nut slot is too low, which would produce buzzing when the open string plays, the nut will have to be either replaced or shimmed from underneath. You can buy replacement nuts direct from Music Man, just give them a call.

Also tell your tech that removing the existing nut requires pulling it slowly upwards, not tapping out sideways, because music man nuts are moulded to shape with a locating pin that sits in a hole in the fingerboard slot. If they pull wrong, It'll break (so make sure to have a spare).

Would this work? Compressed air to clean out slot. File it SLIGHTLY to make wider and then apply Dunlop Superlube

My brand new L3 has been doing it of the factory, very annoying indeed.

Can't hurt but I don't think it will help. You can use a piece of paper folded over to clean out the slot just fine. No need to make it wider, that won't help here, it needs to be lower in the back than it is in the front.

Hold the G-string down between the 2nd and 3rd frets. How high is the G string over the 1st fret?

do you mean paper folded over the file or just folded paper to clean it out?

Heres before and after, but now it sounds like before. I would appreciate any sort of idea on what this may be and how to rectify it.

Thanks, this is so annoying!

I have a Luke III and it has a case of nut ping as well. I did not change string gauge. Super annoying.

I've heard that on occasion from a few of my guitars. Doesn't seem to transfer through the amp. Just put a hair tie around the headstock behind the nut, problem solved.

I have a similar issue on my Morse- the G string rings between the bridge and the tailpiece. It's ringing sympathetically. I just stuck a little rubber grommet between the G and D strings back there, problem solved.
