In what has been referred to in the trade press as "yet another convoluted exchange" but which was given the blessing from on high by a certain mysterious character known only by the initials "BP", I have somehow acquired this:

25thHH.jpg

Jason (bassmonkeee) ended up with my former BA5 SSS. Reports are that he is pleased. Other bassists were involved in this but prefer to remain nameless at this time.

While I am still exploring the myriad (can I use "myriad" on the internets?) tones produced by this creature, I can say that it certainly does a lot of stuff. Some of that stuff is not at all Bongo-like, which interests me. I generally like things to be as Bongo-esque as possible, but this difference is also very good indeed.

I'm in the "first impressions" phase, which can be confusing for someone like me. At this point in the honeymoon, I do kind of think I might have gotten by with a single H model - of course. Being me, how could I not think that?

I also sometimes think: "Look at me with this fancy thing!" But at least my 20th Anniversary SR5 has another fancy top to hang around with, should I ever let my 20th see this thing. It might get button envy, so I'm waiting on that.

It has a couple of little dings - the Bassist To Be Named Later definitely gigged this sucker. This is okay with me. I like stuff to be played, and I'm almost sure the ding by the bridge came from it being bitten by Robin Trower. I might not have that story exactly right, but I'm close.

As a former owner/player of a number of Reverend basses, I thought the abbreviated top horn might throw me off a bit. I had that experience with the Reverends - "whoa, I'm apparently a half-step off." And then I'd look down and see my hands were in the wrong place (this happens to me on all basses, to be honest, but it was worse on the Revs). As it turns out, my fears were unfounded. Must have been the 35" scale on the Revs that contributed to my confusion.

So it's comfy. It's versatile. It's FANCY! It's got a maple board, which I generally avoid but this was a trade so I've made my peace with it. Honestly, my preference for rosewood boards is all visual, so no biggie.

Anyone else put flats on a 25th?

heheheheheh

Congrats Jack! I had flats on my 5HH and liked them. I have half wounds on my fretted 4HSS and am working my way towards a set of brocken in group III's I have laying around :)

BTW... Be carefull with "Monster Truck" mode with flats. It's bongo like dangerous :)

I only have to check with this woman who, at times, thinks she has power over me - my wife. My Jedi mind tricks have been failing lately. She seems to think the kids "need" braces. And food. Whatever.

That's a great bass, to be sure. It just didn't satisfy the jones that I was having for a fretted Big Al. So, now I have the sunburst Big Al 5SSS that I've always wanted. Everybody wins!

JLpre why do you have to ask Jack?... How about there were famous celebrities involved and farm animals and rat poisioning....How about jack suffers from newbassophobia and needed to be coaxed into this easily and calmly? Or there may have been circumstances between the unamed parties that wanted to make sure that I didnt have an issue with a bass and an endorsee.....

Jackie....What you have to do is forget about all the switches....start on the bridge pick up and get to know the eq.....you can start in active or passive....but live with that....when you feel good about that then go to the middle pick up and repeat...then the neck pick up....then you can start integrating your favorite combos....It can be daunting without first understanding the basic tonal capabilities of each pickup

I have tried to do that, but then I get all drooly and my eyes cross and I just have to PUSH A BUTTON then it's like "oh my, what the hell is THAT" and then I think "Well, what if I pushed another one" and then I look up and it's 2 in the morning and I promise myself that I'll really get more systematic about it tomorrow.
