I searched the forums the best I could, and didn't really see what I was looking for, so I thought I'd post my question here.

I'm wondering where might be the best place to find a preamp for a '78 Stingray. I described this bass in another thread....it's the school bass for my son's high school and I offered to take it in and get it looked over, set up, new strings etc. In addition, after discovering just what kind of bass the school had, I also offered to sell it for the band director so he could buy another bass and still have some cash to put back into the band program.

Before I took it in, my son said he had played it a couple of times and said the signal was real weak. As it turns out, the preamp is fried and the guitar tech I took it to said he was surprised there was any signal at all (the preamp is one of the expoxied ones). So now I need to find a replacement. I already have someone interested in buying the bass, so I want to put something back in as close to original as I can. I'm just wondering where might be the best place to look.

I'm calling this bass a '78, but it could technically be a '79. The serial number is B011299, which in the serial number database, seems to be close to basses made in late '78. The tech who is doing the work said the pots are '76 and '77, but we haven't popped the neck yet.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

You can get a replacement through Customer Service. It will be the same circuit and and sound the same but it will not be covered in epoxy. The epoxy was deleted around the time of your Bass anyway. You will have to give the existing preamp the Customer Service in retun aswell.

As it turns out, the person who is interested in buying the bass has a preamp from that era he bought for a project he never finished. If for some reason that one doesn't work, we'll contact Customer Service.

Thanks for the information,...
