BFR owners: How bad does the painted neck slow you down?

There is no difference. My Luke BFR has the unfinished neck. My JP6 BFR has the finished neck.
My hands sweat the same and operate at the same speed. No sticking or dragging.

Get the BFR!

If it's fast enough for JP, my guess is, it should be fast enough for you as well?

And if you're faster than JP the coating will start melting away after the first eight bars anyway...

But seriously: I think it's more or less a matter of personal preferences plus a finished neck is less sensitive to environmental changes (dry vs. humid conditions etc.)

If you can afford it, go get one - these are top notch instruments!

The neck is mahogany. This is why its painted in the first place. It is a much more porous wood than maple and much more prone to the elements. The finish protects the wood. Sure, you could sand it down, but that'll screw your warranty and shorten the life of the neck.

I'm tempted to see if I can just fight through the painted neck, but then again ordering an almost 3000 guitar without trying it first is a little risky to say the least.

There's something that makes me believe that BFR is better, but I know for sure that I will love the fully loaded Mystic Dream, the BFR will be a gamble.

If painted necks slow you down can we all chip in and get the neck on malmsteen’s strat painted !!

I have a couple of guitars with painted necks, one is a Gibson LP and that definitely gets sticky due to the nitro finish, the other is a Washburn which is more like the BFR, painted and clear coated. The washburn does not get sticky but I prefer the feel of an raw neck.

I think it’s probably more that painted necks are perceived to be sticky and because that’s in your head translates through to what you’re playing.

I've played on all types of finished and unfinished necks. For me, it all depends on the quality of the finish. My JP6 has an awesome finish which makes it easy to play. The satin finish on my other guitar's neck is smooth and also easy to play. The painted finish on some of my older guitars (both made in USA and imports) vary on playability. It all depends on the quality of the finish.

Played the blackburst BFR JP at Hollywood Guitar Center today.

Amazing. Felt just as nice as the unfinished neck on the Y2D Morse.

Would JP commission a guitar that made it harder to play fast?

I think that JP needs the painted neck just to slow his playing down a little bit because he is affraid of the nightmare of playing so fast that it becomes one single note (and his hands burns up)
