Big Al 5 single H first impressions

I have a gig tonight with the three-piece version of our band and if Mrs.sitonmybass can at least come to the first set which begins at 8:00 P.M. then I will play the new Big Al 5 single H. She always wants to come to any gigs where I'm playing a brand new bass for the first time and I always wait until she can be there. The three piece format will be a great way for me to experience the new bass. I'll be sure to post my observations/conclusions.

This forum has been quite complimentary and welcoming to Mrs.sitonmybass, she is a keeper. She bought me a fretless five-string as a first anniversary present which I sold along with another bass to get my Bongo 5 single H which I now consider to be my first anniversary present from her. She completely paid for my Bongo 5 HH as a second anniversary present and I also have another bass that was a wedding present from her. My parents and her jointly paid for a bass for me as a Christmas present last year.

Don't misunderstand me, she's not just great because she has bought me basses; she's beautiful, intelligent, witty, creative, easy-going, supportive, complimentary, encouraging and endowed with common sense and true spirituality. The fact that she shares my passion is a true blessing which draws us together. I also do my best to respond in kind.

My parents are also very supportive and a true blessing.

On another note, I too was unaware of the body wood change on the Big Al but as I understand it both 4 and 5 string versions are now African mahogany?? Is this correct?

Tonight I played my Big Al 5 single H for the first time at a gig. It definetly lives up to BP's assessments of its merits. All of its construction elements add to its overall vibe; the mahogany body, the 4-band EQ, and the ceramic magnets wound to StingRay specs (which is the same single H found in the 25th models.) It sat well in the mix without "pushing through" it. It provided a "cushy" and warm fundamental and when I dug in, it provided the perfect amount of "grit" with highs that were unobtrusive and pleasant. When I played all of my EBMMs through an amp at home yesterday, I had determined that one of the best ways to describe this bass is that it is very responsive. It seems to deliver your own individual expressiveness becoming more of an extension of yourself as opposed to a being a tool which only delivers its own individualized sound.

I used parallel/active the entire night.

It's comfortable, well balanced, and its looks draw a lot of attention. EBMM's Candy Red finish is by far the most beautiful red that I have seen on an instrument.

This bass is a much welcomed addtion to my EBMM collection.

It's interesting that all of the models that I own are actually EBMM creations as opposed to the StingRay whose beginnings pre-dated EBMM (I had an original StingRay back in 1981.)
