I decided to switch things up a little bit with my Bongos.
I've always preferred the way the single coil sounds at the neck position over the humbucker with my Bongos. Since I have the new Big Al 5H fretless, I decided to swap the necks on my two Bongos for the time being. I also swapped out the tort pickguard for the black one. It really has the white tuxedo thing going on right now.
This is the result:
It's amazing how creamy the Bongo has become considering that it was as white as the Big Al when I got it back in 2004.
I really like the way they look together. And, the flatwound Group IIIs sound beautiful with the single coil and piezos with the frets. I put TI Jazz Rounds on the Big Al. They have a great singing quality with the fretless and respond well to the preamp and pickup. It definitely gives me two distinctly different sounding basses with loads of versatility.
Of course, this means the Sapphire Black Bongo with the white headstock of the fretless neck looks like it fell asleep in the sun wearing a hat right now, but I don't see that one getting as much playing time as these two for the foreseeable future.
