tomorrow im going to buy a sub 1 (i hope) the guy says he swapped the bridge for an xl500. i know there are bill lawrence and the bill lawrence usa which are knockoffs or something. i wanna know if there is any difinitive way to tell them apart because i dont want to be paying extra for a pickup that isnt worth what i think its worth

Historically the real Lawrences had thicker blades and the "fake" ones (I say that since there's been a long standing trademark dispute) had thin blades. But recently the fakes have the thicker blades as well.

If you take the pickup off it should be stamped underneath. There's a forum if you have any questions- Bill Lawrence Wilde-Gate - Gear Discussion - Fender Info-Base™ (F.I.B.™) - Message Board - Yuku

The real one only costs about $50, so shouldn't really affect the cost much.

ill get some pics soon but im a little busy and i kinda had to save the guitar from its previous owner. its dirty and needs a setup. i wanted one because i thought it would be a little less modern and more versatile than my jp but with that bill larwence 500xl its the total opposite.
